AMD + ATI...Will They? Won't They?

Lord have mercy, it’s like Ross and Rachel all over again, only this time…wait, no, it’s like…Seal and Heidi, sans scarification. No, wait, I got it! It’s like Paul and Heather Mills McCartney: Somebody’s 64 (bit), somebody’s already been crippled, and even though it ain’t gonna be pretty, you can bet your shiny heiny that somebody is gonna come out of this thing richer than sin.

(...That’s not what it’s like, is it?)

Whichever poor simile you choose, Joystiq reports that despite what everyone was saying earlier, AMD will not be discontinuing the ATI brand name after subsuming the graphics hardware contender in a $5.4bil buyout last month.

What this means for schmoes like you and me, I ain’t gotta clue. AMD says they’re keeping the ATI brand alive, but Joystiq mentions the dread phrase “integrated graphics,” which sends chills down my spine. Chills of the bad sort, mind you. Methinks there’s something nefarious in the works that involves making horrible integrated chips and plastering the dead, necrotic, hideously decomposed AMD brand name over the whole ugly thing.

Then again, I’m just a drama queen with a GeForce card.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
