Enchanted Arms or Bleeding Eyes

GameTrailers.com has footage of openly gay Makoto in the game Enchanted Arms, which comes out next week.
If you have gone to the Ubisoft site after our original post on Makoto, you may have walked away with the same feeling as one of our readers Richie:
According to the rest of his description on the Ubi site, he is basically a hedonistic ditz, and he can’t help but fall in love with Toya, the straight boy. This, along with his habit of cross-dressing, makes his character basically a list of gay stereotypes, designed by and for ignorant straight people. So I guess this means video games have caught up to the level of Will & Grace.
Oh Richie, if the description turned you off – DO NOT CLICK ON THIS LINK
If you watch the video following that you’ll be treated to Makoto saying, “Certainly nothing compared to my extra-special Makoto love lunch.”

I love that the description of the video calls him “one the most unique characters in video games”
unique..hmmm, yes…unique
Is that what they’re calling it now?
I am surprised anybody would create such a shallow stereotypical character. Having a gay character opens up some possible depth, but they have ignored that and gone for a crap comedy routine.
Alexander: Is that really the voice-over, or is this just a joke?
sadly, it’s not a joke…that’s the real voicover
Wow, I’m famous. But despite my computer screen telling me all-capitally not to click the link, I did. My reaction to the video was to laugh uproariously (especially that last “honey” line… oy), mostly to keep from crying.
Like the Fruit Brute said Noche, this is not a joke.
Yikes.
Sadly, it seems that gay characters will continue to be simplistic stereotypes in games for awhile.
Baby steps, I guess. At first it was stereotypical joke NPCs, then about 20 years later came the non-stereotypical gay party member (Joachim, etc.), now up to the stereotypical joke party member.
Indeed, it’s up to the level of Will & Grace. Then again, a lot of people were praising that crap show for being a half-step in the right direction, so I reserve my judgement until I see him in-game. He could be surprisingly deep.
Look at Big Sis Prinny from Disgaea: A pink penguin with peglegs who says “dood” at the end of every sentence, and she has one of the most tear-jerking scenes in the game.
