Game Industry Fails Women

BBC News reports that EA’s David Gardner believes video games are failing girls. Here is a snippet fo the article:
Mr Gardner said one of the biggest problems was that the content aimed at women gamers was not appealing.
“They don’t want ‘pink games’. They are not trying to play girly games where Paris Hilton and Britney Spears go shopping and put make-up on.
“Those kind of things have not been that successful.”
But he said games such as The Sims and websites such as Pogo.com proved there was a market for women gamers.
“Most of the Sims players are girls – 70% are women under 25,” he said.
“The Sims is really a game about relationships – and that’s what girls want – they want relationships, they want to be able to chat.”
While it is, or so I believe, common knowledge that not as many girls play games as guys, the game industry would be far more profitable if it tried harder to appeal to both sexes equally. That is, to say, that any loss in the teenage male demographic could be canceled out or surpassed by the increase in female gamers. However, this, so far, is the single opinion of the head of a major developer. I would like to see more “analysts” come out of the woodwork and throw in their $0.02.
