Manly Yaoi Games

I don’t presume to understand Yaoi, frankly, I don’t even know if it’s an adjective or a noun. During college, when one of my good friends came back from Japan, he brought back with him what I just called “gay Anime porn” at the time – I’ve learned since. The book which he brought back, and every Yaoi book that gets sent to the newspaper I work for without asking, pretty much involves twinks and waxed man-bois.

One of our readers leoboiko posted a link on our forums to an article I read forever ago, but it’s worth a read here. Be warned, it’s very long. It is safe for work because all the naughty bits are covered by robo-dolls.

The game from the article: Ie, Tatemasu! can be found at The Underground Campaign. My favorite quote from the article is actually an Editor’s Note:

Brandon’s note: Yaoi and shonen-ai are both terms that refer to entertainment media (games, anime, manga) that involve pretty men/boys falling in love and/or engaging in sexual activity. They are largely designed by girls, for girls, and in general, legitimate homosexual men have very little interest in the stuff.

Legitimate homosexual men have very little interest in the stuff…ROFLMAO!

Apparently we have a “yellow-belt” in the Japanese language (his words, not mine) who reads our humble site. Hopefully we can get him to translate some the The Underground Campaign site, which is not only in Japanese, but horrible to navigate.

Funny thing is that since the guys in some Yaoi are so girly (ex: Bridget) that there are a number of heterosexual male yaoi fans out there.

It’s interesting that you are writing about this right now, because currently there is a discussion going on in the comics/manga blogosphere about what the differences are between “yaoi” and “gay” comics. The latest volley (and a good summary) can be found here:

If you’re interested in finding out a little more about what yaoi is about (particularly from the perspective of a gay guy), it might be worth a look.

Yeah, I’m into anime pretty hard, so I’ve seen some gay-themed anime (Loveless is really good, I really recommend it). What’s interesting is that in these anime, homosexuality is not looked upon as different or weird…me and my friend think it’s because anime is a way that the Japanese rebel against the rules of their culture, and, of course, portraying gays and lesbians as “normal” is a part of that rebellion.

On a side note, the gays in anime usually serve as comic relief, but it’s much less offensive/stereotypical than here in the states. It’s really interesting, actually, how the Japanese mostly always include the “macho” gay guy along with the typical “flaming” homo. They’re more progressive than us, I guess, but I’m not complaining :-D.

Please. It might be frowned on in japan but I wouldn’t be too surprised if homosexuality has an unspoken acceptance in japan. Japan is very different from america. For starters they don’t have the sexual stigma that we do. Their pretty sexually liberated, it’s part of their culture. Any sexual repression in their cultural is a reflection of their defeat in WW2 and the subsequent occupation by America.
