Rayman Raving Rabbids... A Party Game?!?!?

I know, I was pretty surprised. According to RawmeatCowboy over at Go Nintendo, it’s true. He went through the trouble of translating a french Ninendo Magazine, who interviewed the developers.
“The game is comprised of two principal modes. First the story mode, which is organized into fifteen days (virtual, evidently). Each day, you begin in your cell. At the start things are very sinister! From your slammer, you can enter the Rabbit Arena, where you wait for the events. You can attempt five mini-games each day – four events and one boss encounter. Depending on your rate of success, the rabbits will congratulate you and offer objects of comfort for your cell (I’m guessing you will get to design your cell or something?). You can unlock amusing bonuses such as tacky costumes and disco music! When in the second mode you can replay the mini-games freely, either playing by yourself, or multiplayer!”
Apparently the developers were planning on creating a traditional platformer. Once they got their hot little hands on the Wii dev kits, the game changed. They wanted to harness the Wii controls to create a fun party game. The mini games aren’t a collection of two second games like Wario Ware. Some of the games are 10 seconds, others like the Doom style game lasts several minutes. Then there are some events that are linked together in succession.
This news is rather strange after seeing the concept art, which looked like anything but a party game. Hopefully they will take this Rabbids setting and make a traditional platformer in the future. Let’s see what Ubisoft has up their sleeves. It could be pretty surprising.
