State Of Illinois To Pay ESA And Others A Cool Half Million

Our side of the violent video games debate has won a monetarily substantial victory over the Jack Thompson’s of the world. The city of Illinois was ordered to pay “the video game industry” (read:the Entertainment Software Association, Video Software Dealers Association and Illinois Retail Merchants Association) a whopping $510,528.64 in attorney’s fees in response to it’s unconstitutional effort at banning the sale of violent video games.
From WebWire:
“Judge Kennelly’s rulings send two irrefutable messages – not only are efforts to ban the sale of violent video games clearly unconstitutional, they are a waste of taxpayer dollars,” said Douglas Lowenstein, president of the ESA, the trade group representing U.S. computer and video game publishers. “The sad fact is that the State of Illinois knew this law was unconstitutional from the beginning. Taxpayers have a right to know that over half a million of their dollars and countless government hours were thrown away in this fruitless effort.”
Now, if the rest of the states would follow suit, the ESA would be sitting pretty. Finally, someone of some authority has stood up and said what I’ve been saying all along. If you don’t want your kids playing violent video games, then it’s your responsibility to make sure they don’t, not the publishers’. The same goes for porn and R rated movies. I refuse to be punished for the “good of the children”, that’s why I don’t have any, no offense to those of you who do. I love kids, but I don’t feel it’s my responsibility to say, tone down what we do here on GayGamer on the off chance that a child might see it. We have registered with NetNanny and a few other sites to do all we can to make sure that little Timmy’s eyes don’t have their retinas burned out by The King of the Cosmos’ giant package. We’ve done our part, and now it’s the parents’ turn to do theirs.
