Gay Musician Wins Canada's Polaris Music Prize

Openly gay Canadian musician, Owen Pallett, has taken home the first ever Polaris Music Prize for his curiously titled album, He Poos Clouds. His is a one man act in which he plays violin into a pedal controlled sampler where he loops them and plays live over the loops. It’s really quite impressive. What makes him notable to us though, is the name of his act, Final Fantasy. Pallet is a big fan of the game and, according to the pics I’ve seen, is very cute and very fond of dressing up in cosplay like costumes.
From a 2005 interview in Now Toronto
“I try to stay in touch with my more embarrassing, nerdy side,” Pallett explains. “I don’t feel like a cool person. I feel more like a person who’d be very happy playing Grand Theft Auto all day, and I feel like that person has a whole series of revelations and ways of looking at the world that are under-expressed in other forms of music. What does a nerd think?”Make no mistake though, his music, while beautiful, has no real gay agenda. He is a musician for the sake of music, which I think is all to the good.
“As far as whether the music I make is gay or queer, yeah, it comes from the fact that I’m gay, but that doesn’t mean I’m making music about it.”Congratulations, Owen. We will be watching you closely here at the GG castle. I already have your picture in a sparkly frame next to my bed.

owen pallett is really talented, and the name final fantasy isn’t a just a nerdy video game reference. a lot of his music deals wit the same things as the game series, like companionship, magic, capitalism, curroption. . .
