ARG’s (Alternate Reality Games) are frightening and fascinating at the same time. They are games set in the real world, which are essentially grand scheme role-playing games, but you play yourself in the game. From a journalistic side of things, ARG’s can become weird because writing about them could make you part of the game, or are you already part of the game? ARG’s drop clues in the real world and players will analyze every piece of data because anything can be a clue.
I first heard about ARG’s back in 2001, right before a certain incident occurred that made paranoia and fear turn from fun game mechanic, to an all too real life mechanic.
Two years ago I came across Perplex City. Apparently that game is still going on and I still remember sitting at my computer trying to write about it and being totally confused on how to explain it. When I interviewed the people in charge of Perplex City, they were so vague about the game mechanics, there really wasn’t much to write about. Not to mention that my contacts name was Bronwen Liggitt, and even after meeting with her at E3 and seeing her driver’s license, I still thought her name was an anagram for something in the game. I figured I’d get around to writing about it once the narrative was complete and I could see the full picture.
Well, now there is apparently a new ARG out there called LonelyGirl15 on YouTube. ARGN has a full write-up about their theory regarding it here. For those who love deep, deep mystery and the paranoia that goes with games like these – here is a new one… well, maybe, it could be an ARG, it could not be, nobody really knows.
