Oh, Makoto

Ok, so I’m about two days into playing Enchanted Arms, efficiently delivered by Gamefly.com.
As much as I detest that the first really openly gay character is a Queeny McQueen of the Westchester Queens – it’s a step. A horrible step that perpetuates stereotypes, but a step.
(I’ve re-written this next section about three times and it always comes out sounding like a “Building a Bridge to the Future” speech) All I’m going to say is that it’s a step, and with the lack of outrage or attention over the character, maybe we’ll get some more masculine gay characters in the future. Cross your fingers.
So, with the acceptance of Makoto for who he is, let’s go over his deal a bit. A raging queen who pines for his best friend Toya and is insanely protective of him. Toya is a popular student at their enchanting school, who really doesn’t mind the attention he gets from Makoto. Things start to come crashing down when Atsuma shows up and diverts Toya’s attention, Makoto becomes jealous – then the town gets destroyed. The real character to hate in this game is Atsuma, the main character, he makes Tidus from FFX look like a rocket scientist. How I hate Atsuma.
Anyway, Makoto delivers many, many lines that will make any self-respecting ‘mo cringe or laugh. So far, my favorite has been when Makoto cooked a meal for Toya, because “[his] love for Toya is soaked into everything [he] makes,” and explains to Atsuma that the meal is, “The special Makoto love omelet, accompanied with the pinkest of pickles.”
PINKEST OF PICKLES!

I stopped playing this game after about an hour, because I was so disgusted and insulted by this depiction of a gay character. It’s a giant step backwards if anything.
Maybe we should just take things a little easier and enjoy the laughs…we’ve often found ourselves laughing at straight characters (esp. the stereotypical straight guy) in games. To be honest…how many of us can say we’ve never known someone like him before…I think that would be none of us.
