Smash'em Up Brawler On Xbox Live Arcade.

What if Super Smash Brothers and Powerstone had a bastard stepchild on Xbox Live Arcade? The child would be Small Arms of course. 1up has a preview of Small Arms and it looks like a blast, supporting four players with full live support.

When the bullets start flying, the action flashes by so fast that before you know it you’re readying up for the next round. That’s by design. And the engine has no problem keeping up with it all. This may be a Live Arcade game, but it takes full advantage of the 360 hardware. Three of the six processing pipelines are devoted to special effects alone, and it shows. Every projectile throws off sparks and particles when it hits. Thanks to some amazing mastery of compression, it all looks fantastic too. Textures and models have been created at mural size, so large that they come to almost 1 Gig, but Gastronaut has managed to squeeze it all down to the Arcade game limit of 50 Meg. And with all that, the team still takes a no-compromise approach to hitting a smooth 60 frames per second. As far as they’re concerned there’s no room for anything else.

Small Arms really looks like a good time. I enjoyed Super Smash Brothers, but never got into it because I didn’t know any other gamers that played it. The single player experience is only so much fun.

Now, to see a similar quick shoot’em brawler (is that an oxymoron?) like SSB, coming to Xbox Live Arcade with multiplayer support, it’s looks like my need for pick up and play violence will once again be met with a flourish. This game is looking more and more with every bit of new information and is generating a lot of interest. In a recent developer interview, all they would say regards the release date was “soon” followed by a smile.

It’s like they KNOW when you can’t have something, it only makes it hotter and makes you want it more. Unless it’s like Lumines Live and they’ve played so hard to get that you don’t even care anymore and wouldn’t play it just to prove a point, just like the jealous boyfriend I am.

I’m just kidding, Lumines, baby. You know I’ll take you back. Just tell me when and where to pick you up.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
