WoW Does Drag

Wonderland is one of my favorite blogs. Alice and crew always seem to come up with the wacky news and it’s always great fun. I ran across this little gem a few days ago, but I haven’t been able to post it until now. Apparently there is a bug in WoW software that occasionally puts female clothing on male characters. Of course, any self respecting gay gamer would be thrilled with this fabulous pink halter top dress thing. Some of our straight brethren, however, are less than thrilled.
I followed the link on Wonderland to the place where this photo originated which was a European WoW forum board. The thread was titled “THIS is why guys play female characters” and went on to say “Get ready to have your eyes bleed” before linking to the photo. Then there were some great comments about how they actually played female characters because they would rather look at a girls ass all day rather than a mans.
First thing I would say to these people is, if you are really that threatened by looking at a pixelated version of a fictional video game characters ass, go play a puzzle game, or hell, go outside and have a real life. As for freaking out because your manly character just picked up some female attire, I say wear it loud, wear it proud, and be sure you have a matching purse and shoes.

What?? Stupid gender obsession issues on a forum for an online game? SHURLEE U JEST!
How evolved can you expect someone to be when they’re spending all their free time playing WoW… um…yeah…
I didn’t even notice that was a dress for women. That outfit actually suits him quite well! But maybe I’ve played too many Final Fantasy titles to pass judgement on this.
I don’t think it has anything to do with being threatened by a male character, but more to do with playing a character they find aesthetically pleasing. I wouldn’t worry about male players playing female characters for the above reason, I would be more concerned about male players refusing to play as a female character for fear of having his masculinity questioned.
Hence I believe most video games star male protagonists, and when they do star females, it’s either not obvious (as in a FPS) or they’re a sex symbol (ala Lara Croft).
Aaah, but I want that! My Robe of the Guardian Saint would look much better as the female version on my male troll :(
