Zune To Use XBLA Currency

When the Zune launches on November 14 – just in time to c*ckblock the PS3 launch – it will bring with it the Zune Marketplace, which is intended to rival iTunes as much as the Zune hopes to KO the iPod. But unlike iTunes, the Zune Marketplace will charge you virtual currency for your music: Microsoft Points, the same imaginary coin that makes the Xbox Live Arcade go ‘round. At 79 points a track, that’s about the same as Apple’s $0.99. Is Microsoft setting us up for a Monopoly-style fun-bucks system, hoping that customers won’t count their points (what Microsoft calls a “stored value system”) as closely as they count their pennies? For that matter, with two next-gen consoles and the iPod-killer launching so close together, who’s gonna have the dough (real or imaginary) to buy much of anything?
