eBay Restricts PS3 And Wii Auctions

When eBayers decide to make money off of the launch of a new console, the effect can be wide-reaching; stores with limited inventory may see a significant portion of their merchandise fall into the hands of those who stockpile the new system only to sell it on eBay for double or triple the amount (or more). With two fancy new consoles on the horizon, eBay is taking steps to prevent the fracases that happened with the PS2 and Xbox 360 launches: Only one of each system can be listed per seller prior to launch date; to qualify for buyer protection the seller must only accept PayPal payments and must have no less than a 98% rating with feedback of at least 50; no Buy It Now listings will be accepted; and the listing must include a clear photograph of the pre-order receipt. Will it help? Maybe. Will it help you get the system of your dreams terribly sooner? Probably not.

I’m not sure how much of a dent this is going to make in the ebay sales of PS3’s. I’m sure everyone knows at least one person that meets the rating feedback and auction history required. Still, I applaud ebay for making some efforts to curb the “new resale” auctions.
Good show E-Bay!
