God Hand: First Impressions

I’ve been looking forward to God Hand ever since I saw the first trailers. I’m not usually prone to playing brawlers, but as everyone knows, I’m a huge advocate of nut kicking. So, to see a game where nut kicking was actually a special move, naturally I was intrigued. The price tag of a meager $30 in a world of $50 games was also a big draw.
Let me start off by saying this game is a whole lot of fun. It is pure, mindless ass kicking goodness and quite a departure from Clover Studios’ last offering, Okami. There’s not much downtime here, just a lot of unadulterated button mashing. Not to say that the fighting doesn’t have it’s nuances, it does. You have a series of “Roulette” or special moves, as well as reaction buttons and customizable combos. Pimp slaps and power punches are the order of the day and if you can get in a Stomp or a Pummel, you’re treated to some hilarious beat em up animations and a very sore thumb.
The surroundings and character design are utterly bizarre and the Ventures style surf guitar soundtrack is awesome. You are a Capcom style hero in a western town fighting leather clad punk rock enemies to a Hawaii 5-0 -esque score. I know it sounds weird, but I found it to be a winning combination.

About 3 levels into it you are faced with your first demi-boss battle against “Q&A”, a tag team couple that are so gay, they put Enchanted Arm’s Makoto to shame. Clad in matching blue and yellow show outfits complete with feather collars, they look like something more out of Viva Las Gaygas than your typical fighting game. I only wish they had given them manly voices, rather than the typical lisping, nelly ones they decided to go with, but with taunt lines like “Wanna go Brokeback, cowboy?” you can’t help but laugh.
IGN gave this game a 3 which is absolutely ludicrous in my mind. The reader reactions have been very favorable and I am really loving it myself. I’d say, for thirty bucks, you can’t miss. But, if you still have trepidations, try it as a rental first.

Good god Fruit thanks to you all I can think about is playing this damn game! thanks for bringing it to work!
When I asked for it at the game store, the clerks gave me odd looks. Screw ‘em, that’s what they get for trusting IGN.
