Guillermo Del Toro Working On Hellboy Game

Guillermo del Toro

In an interview conducted by IGN, film director Guillermo del Toro is working with Konami on a Hellboy game based on the comic book, due out in 2007. There are no details about which platforms will get the game, and the details are scarce. However, del Toro stated that the player will be able to use Hellboy’s glove to pick up anything lying around to pummel his enemies. You can smash up doors to create metal cudgels to pound your adversaries.

The timeline of the narrative will jump back and forth from past to present. Del Toro said:

“You can go from one environment, like the Gobi desert, to a haunted town in medieval Japan. And then you can go and play in the ruins of a castle that is full of Nazi doomsday machines. And then you can go and wander through the empty streets of a haunted Eastern European village. And each of those levels has a common threat enemy, and a great vibe to the gameplay.

The other game Del Toro is working on is Sundown, developed by Terminal Reality who also developed BloodRayne. Sundown will be set in a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies. Hmmm… I think I’ve heard this setup before somewhere. The game is still being shopped around to publishers.

I do believe that the future of storytelling lies within an interactive platform and more likely or not it will come out of a marriage of movies, videogames, and TV, so I’m trying to learn all those mediums.

Del Toro is a fascinating director, he has a few missteps in his career like Mimic, but I’m not going into that one. He directed the fabulous Chronos and The Devils Backbone, both of which are worth picking up if you haven’t seen them. He has a unique style and vision, and I can’t wait to see how the Hellboy game will be influenced by his input.

Check out the trailer for his new movie Pan’s Labyrinth, it looks pretty spectacular.
