MTV And Harmonix Finally Get Married!

While it may be old news that MTV was acquiring Harmonix (the development studio behind Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, and the entire Karaoke Revolution franchise), the deal finally went through today and the MA-based development studio is now officially a part of the Viacom family. The final price tag for this little venture? A cool $175 million.
According to the press statement sent out today, MTV President Christina Norman had this to say:
“The acquisition of Harmonix will deepen MTV’s connection to its audience via on-line, mobile and console music gaming, and expand the relationship with both labels and artists through the creation of games based on classic songs as well as future album releases.”
I’m going to go on record by saying that if MTV and Harmonix can make a mobile-phone rhythm game that doesn’t suck, I will be the first to buy it. Even if that doesn’t work out, I will have no problem investing in every incarnation of Guitar Hero that comes out in the foreseeable future.

How do you think this will affect the song selection on Harmonix games now?
I’ve been turning up my nose at GH and GH2, but since hearing Josh Homme couldn’t beat GH at No One Knows on hard, I think I’m gonna suck it up and buy both of ‘em this winter…. after I get bored of the Wii launch titles and start pining for Mario, that is….
Hey, if nothing else I gotta be able to play War Pigs….
No love/mention for Frequency? For shame!
