No PSP Price Cut In 2006

I just can’t help it. I try to ignore Sony. I try to feel compassion for Sony, which is ridiculous because it’s a company, not a person, and it doesn’t have any feelings to worry about in the first place. But a person gets tired of writing negative things about Sony all the freaking time. I completely agree with our darling Boy of Tomorrow, Sony is just asking for guff, and this time it’s not even tangential to the PS3 meltdown/shortage/clusterf*ck. The PSP, which currently sells for $200 or $250 if you want some extra stuff, won’t be seeing a much-needed price cut this year. Much-needed not only because it’s getting its butt whipped by the DS, but also because Sony just flat-out needs some friendly news. Something other than lines like “We don’t care” and “There is no overheating problem” and “You are. Nuh-uh. You are. Are too. Are too. I’m telling Mom.” A Sony official told Reuters:

We don’t necessarily see the need to cut the price…We need to offer broader value and introduce new consumers to what the PSP can do.

Adding more games will be great for the PSP, but introducing us to what the PSP can do? It could cut its price, for starters, which would “offer broader value.”

Some vendors are taking off $20-$30 the SRP voluntarily. I do think price is one of the major factors PSP did not spread like wildfire. Most people are not willing to spend $200+ on a portable gaming device. If graphics are a priority why not get a console with HDTV support rather than staring at a tiny screen? Graphics alone will not sell consoles. If that where the case, we would all be playing with our Game Gear Advance SPs today.

Don’t forget to add crap games.

I’ve got a PSP and there’s not a single game I would go out and buy.

Poor Sony

I didn’t buy a PSP, because basicly it seemed like an over priced movie player. It wasn’t innovative, it had the same crap that already existed thrown into a small machine with a huge price tag. Not to mention it’s a high maitanance system. You need memory cards that are expensive to make it work to it’s full capacity. The MP3 feature is worthless, because again, you need those cards that go for about 90 bucks for a gig. That really doesn’t hold many movies, game saves, MP3s, emulaters and roms. It’s getting to be where you have to be rich now adays to be able to have and use Sony gaming products. And they like that just fine.

Meanwhile, the DS had something new to offer gamers, a new way to play. A better way to interact with the game. Games are also 10 bucks cheeper new for the DS, and any extra things needed like screen covers and stylus’ go under 10 dollars. Which sings to gamers.

I have a PSP, my 2gb card costed me 40 bucks. When you convert an average video to mpeg4, the filesize is considerably smaller. There have been alot of good games, and I have yet to have a period where there wasnt anything to get, or that I didnt have anything to play. I have had my psp since march. Extra items are also pretty cheap for the psp, unless you want to go ultra high end. My extra battery costed me only 8 dollars. They system came with a pouch, headphones and a wristrap. Screen covers are cheap across the board.
Of cours the ds titles are cheaper, they are cheaper games!? The majority of ds titles are either 2d or have psone quality visuals, which both essentially are cheap as hell to make nowadays. PSP games, cost more because its like making a game for the dreamcast. Many new games look just as good as some ps2 titles, so of course its going to cost as much. However the majority of psp games are 10 to twenty bucks cheaper than current gen ps2 games. Half of the library is barely over 20 bucks in most game shops.

I can understand prefering one over the other, but to use pretty much made up talking points to justify it is just fanboy level idiocy. I was a console gamer and never even considered buying a portable until the psp came, since it game an near console like experience (dont believe me, play Tekken:DR). So if they can make a portable gamer out of a console gamer uninterested in that market, they are doing something right. All of my friends never owned a portable until they bought the psp, they were all staunch console gamers.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
