Sony Sues Modders, Feels Better

Sony may be the desperate housewife of the gaming world at the moment, but there’s one butt she can still kick: the little guy. In the classiest abuse of the DMCA since those three Xbox modders faced 5 years in prison, Sony has punk’d French mod-chip company Divineo with a $9mil lawsuit. Divineo has been churning out a slew of chips for all sorts of systems including both Xboxes, PSOne, PS2, and GameCube, as well as the DS-Xtreme, and since Divineo is not a US-based company, the suit doesn’t seem likely to do much more than shut down their US sales. In contrast, the Xbox modders dodged prison and ended up with home detention and $2,600 fines: what’s the hyperbolic-threat to actual-consequences ratio for $9mil?
