1Up Retracts Neverwinter Nights 2 Review

Here’s something you don’t see every day. Seems that 1Up has officially retracted its Neverwinter Nights 2 review; not any quiet updates or surreptitious addenda, but a full-out “We’re sorry, y’all” retraction. The offending content? A 5/10 score and a rather loony diatribe against the admittedly challenging mission of bringing pen-and-paper D&D into a modern gaming medium, the entirety of which can now be found deep in the bowels of the BioWare forums. It’s a pretty harsh review clearly colored more by the reviewer’s dislike of the idea of the game and its genre than by his actual game experience.
Reader reaction must have been toxic, because 1Up didn’t hold anything back in their apology:
Upon further review of the author’s text, listening to the feedback from our community and others, and after internal discussion between the 1UP and GFW editors, we have determined that the text of the review did not live up to our editorial standards. We respect the opinions of Mr. Peckham and all of our writers, but we felt that this particular review of Neverwinter Nights 2 did a disservice to fans of the RPG genre.
We have commissioned a new review by a different author to be published next week on 1UP.com, and in the January issue of Games For Windows.
We truly regret our error, and apologize to you, our readers.
Jinkies! Good thing we were a little more reasonable in our own review-y first response to Neverwinter Nights 2. It’s a great game if it’s your bag; if it isn’t…you better watch out!

I don’t understand why they would apologize for being disparaging of D&D fans but not apologize for being openly disparaging of stuff like Hello Kitty Roller Rescue and Barbie Horse Adventure, which are also highly regarded by their target audience.
I suppose that 27-year-old guys who live in their parents’ basement and leave the house once a week to roll dice are a little more scary than 6 year old girls, but still.
