Aeropause: DS Is Totally Hardcore

As I sit playing Yoshi’s Island 2 on my pink DS, I can’t help but giggle like a schoolgirl at the thought of the DS being “hardcore.” But Steven over at Aeropause has given good reason for us to think otherwise. In his own words, “the Nintendo DS is home to some of the best hardcore titles I’ve played in more than 20 years of gaming experiences.” He then goes on to cite 3 games and tell us exactly why they are hardcore. His list of titles includes Viewtiful Joe, Castlevania and Ouendan!
I’ve played Ouendon! and Castlevania on the DS and there is no doubt that they are both pretty tough. Is this the dawning of a new era of intense gaming for the little Nintendo handheld? I know one thing for sure, when I flash that pink DS, everyone knows exactly how hardcore I really am.

I wouldn’t know about Viewtiful Joe but Ouendan and Castlevania just don’t seem to qualify as hardcore at all. I thought they were both pretty easy. Well, the latest Castlevanias anyway; there were some thumb breakers years ago.
Well, once again, there are a lot of different definitions of “hardcore”. If you go by “loves a challenging game and plays so much that everything seems easy”, then yeah, a bunch of DS games will appeal to him. But when the mainstream gaming press says “hardcore gamer”, they’re usually talking about online FPS and RPG players who spend 16 hours a day with controller (or keyboard/mouse) in hand.
I was the hardest of the hardcore in about 1983, but since I don’t like FPS that much and New Super Mario Bros. seems pretty tough to me, I guess I have to accept that I’m not one anymore.
I have Phoenix Wright, imported Phoenix Wright 2, dressed as Edgeworth for a convention too. I think I’m a hardcore fangirl but not much else.
DS is EXTREME TO THE MAX! It’ll TOTALLY PUNCH YOUR BALLS OFF!
I think Castlevania is pretty easy… the last boss is just huge & frightening… Otherwise Elite Beat Agents is too hard :( arg :(
