Hi-Def Wii On The Way?

OK, our man, Reggie, has indicated that higher resolutions may be on the way for the Wii. First, the decision was made not to include a DVD player with the Wii. Then, DVD enabled Wii was both announced and confirmed to be on the way. Then, in an article in USA Today, he says this”

“Tough choices about not including a DVD player at the start, tough choices about not including high-definition capability at the start. That’s because we wanted a mass-market price, and we believe the market will validate those decisions come launch day on this Sunday,” Fils-Aime said.

“At the start” is the key to the “high-definition capability” statement. Just like there was a decision not to include a DVD player with the Wii “at the start,” that same sentence also suggests that higher resolutions are on the way to all you HD enthusiasts (myself, included and I cannot wait for my component cables to arrive)!

GameInformer contacted a Nintendo rep, and that individual did point out that Nintendo did patch the Wiis to allow people to transfer saved games to the SD cards and that Microsoft was able to patch the Xbox 360 to support 1080p. The rep also noted that “while they said that Nintendo is absolutely not currently announcing any plans to upgrade the maximum resolution from 480p, it shouldn’t be impossible in theory.”

Woot, I know HD isn’t everything, but it sure is nice to have! I have a component input just waiting to be penetrated by the Wii on my receiver.

Wii to support higher res in the future? [Game Informer]

I was this close to whining about how I’ll have to buy a new one when it comes out for hi-def, and then I remembered the next few years it’ll be hooked up to the 9 inch TV in my dorm room, so no worries.

So the graphics do matter now?

SuperTimsy said:

No, not really, but it’s nice to see a clearer picture when you have equipment that supports it.

I really don’t care a whole lot about HD too much. I just think it would be cool for a Nintendo console to finally play DVDs. That’s just what I would want before HD.

It’d be nice if Wii developers could support HD without requiring it. (I’m looking at you, Dead Rising!)

The Wii is hooked up to a 23-year-old, 13” Commodore 64 monitor in my case, so I feel pretty secure saying “no, the graphics don’t matter.”

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
