Kojima Wants PS3 Rumble Back

Hideo Kojima, he of the highly homoerotic Metal Gear Solid Series, is currently working on MGS4 for the PS3. What does he miss the most from the old system? Why, the rumble feature of course!

“The controls in MGS3 got a little complex, so you’ll have a little more direct control in MGS4,” he told Official PlayStation Magazine in a preview feature. “That said, I miss the rumble and even now I hope it will come back.”

Unfortunately for Mr. Kojima, Sony has no such plans to bring back the much missed rumble, as evidenced by Phil Harrison’s comments on the SIXAXIS controller.

“I think that the next generation interfaces that can be created built on SIXAXIS motion sensitivity give tremendous gameplay benefits that far outweigh a reactive vibration function.”

For those of you who actually have PS3s, is this a big deal to you? Personally, I think I would miss the vibration, which for me always added some great scares to games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

I always thought rumble was pretty much just a useless gimmick. I never played a game that was actually IMPROVED by the rumble.

Magic Pink… Rez. :p

Metal Gear actually used Rumble in interesting ways, beyond Massive Damage! My favorite being the radar replacement. It would pulse more and more rapidly as enemies got close.

I would prefer the tilt sensor if it is a choice between gyro or rumble. However, as Wii showed, it’s possible to have both.

Metal Gear Solid games have always made good use of the vibration feature, my favorite being the very slight “bump” the controller gives you when Snake checks Meryl’s pulse in the cutscene before you fight Psycho Mantis. Very subtle, very cool.

Star Ocean used the rumble controlers in a HUGE way. I loved it.

I will miss Silent Hill without the heartbeat on my hands.

I started playing Final Fantasy XII and noticed that by default, rumble was turned off. I turned it on, and realized that it detracted from the experience of the game, and actually preferred to have it off.

It’s a mixed bag. The only games I’ll miss it on is racing, and I’ll end up using a wheel for that anyways.

Rumble is nice but I don’t notice when it’s not there (Like with the Wavebird).

I go through PS2 controllers like mad (needed to buy at least 5). While I still have all the original controllers for my other consoles.
I don’t know the exact cause of it, but I suspect it’s the rumble feature.
As such I just keep the rumble option off with every game I play.
So no, I won’t miss it.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
