More Propaganda By CGDF Uncovered

After rereading the press release I reported on yesterday, something they wrote seemed really familiar: I seemed to recall watching an infomercial containing similarly alarmist and exaggerated claims regarding what video games kids at a local church had access to.

After a half hour of digging through the web, I actually found the footage on the Christian Game Developers Foundation’s own website. I’d love to snarl poetically about the video and its offensive content, but it would probably be easier just to let you make up your own mad libs.

Watch the video after the jump

Christ-centered video games, eheh… and of course you know that they mean E-Rated happyfests of “Press A to hug Jesus” and all sorts of visceral banality. Look, I don’t care if the main character’s a Christian. I’d be thrilled—I’m one myself. But the main focus of a video game…all 49.99 of it… is to be fun. And unless hugging Jesus is as nervous and taxing as Bark at the Moon (Expert, oh let it be Expert) or as frustrating yet hurts-so-good painful as Alma (Ninja Gaiden, who else?), I’d rather be Shout(ing) at the Devil with my sick blood-lined battle axe (read: guitar) and slitting some demon throats (in freakin’ half) with my ninja katana. I mean hey, Okami is all on religion (Shinto), and it’s a great game to boot! It’s possible to have a “Christian”-themed video game, but it’s gotta be fun and engaging first. And not made by the CGDF, because they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Nonetheless, God Bless ;)

Um.. “degradated” isn’t a word.

I would love to actually read the studies they cite, and from which they draw false comparisons. Violence v. lung cancer?!

And what about people who aren’t Christian? You know, most of the world.

I also love how this is just a televangelist style collection plate of a “presentation.”

Addendum: Isn’t Lord of the Rings supposedly exceedingly religiously based? I’m no Christian, but my understanding is that the bible is pretty freaking violent. As the first book ever, you’d think the Xtians would be mad at themselves for starting this tide of violent literature.

Well given that the whole whole first testament was written by Jews might offer some indication as to why most “christians” (that I’ve met)are unfamiliar with the actual text. At the very least they seem to grasp the idea of responsibility, looking to create games they find acceptable rather than mounting a witchhunt.

This just reminds me of Bill Graham’s Bible Blaster:

Why did they not mention that most of the games cited by the kids were Teen rated? Where was the Christian parental control?
Also, as the video went on I waited with baited breath to see how long it would be before he asked for money. Forget the kids, protect the income!
Honestly, he says, to build a game using a game engine costs $350K, have they never heard of mods? And designing a game on paper costs, the price of the paper. I despair…

Holy crap! Videogames teach kids that people are inherently evil and that they should get in fights and stuff? Why aren’t parents helping them learn better?!

Funny thing is, if they MADE a game that was 100% true to the Bible, it’d sell like crazy. The Bible’s one of the more twisted, violent books in history.

What’s really funny is how all those phychiatric and medical bodies that they quote as ‘being concerned’ are the same bodies that insist homosexuality is natural and normal. Don’t you just love selective hearing?

This is ridiculous. I love how they even mention that they can’t just “forbid their children from playing” – as if they have absolutely no power whatsoever. Oh teh fuckin’ noes? Poor them. This is another classic case of bad Xtian™ parents. The only thing I’m glad for is that instead of trying to ban video games in its entirety like some prominent Xtian™ organizations are, the (mildly cute/why does he have to be straight) bearded dude admitted that it’s ingrained in our culture.

While their approach is one of the first rational attempts at this by a Xtian™ group, it’s obvious to anyone with half a brain that this video tries to show video games in the worst possible light and that only their Xtian™ brand games can be their Salvation™.

I couldn’t even watch the entire video, made me sick. The whole comparing Lung Cancer to violence thing was the most unrelated what the hell bull shit I’ve ever heard. Unless their trying to say video games gives us lung cancer it shouldn’t even be mentioned. Also they blamed the video games for violence. Ever think that it might be because of what’s going on in the world. We’re fighting a war based on lies. Kids are seeing and hearing about REAL violence from the news. Why shouldn’t they be desensitized by it.
It’s a scary world out there. At least in most of the games, the good guys win.

While some things are over exaggerated, some things are partially true. Again, its hard for those who aren’t Christians to accept certain claims – Paul talks about this in the bible, saying all this is foolishness to the Greeks.

1 Corinthians 2:14
The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

What I agree with? Not all games are good.
Disagreements: Neutral games are not all that bad… Halo and Socom are fine in a sense.

However, imo games that teach immorality and make it look good – Vice City etc. are bad, more so for kids than for adults.

Sure, parents have to control it. Makes sense. But what I’m trying to say is that its a real and clear issue to me.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
