NY Times Gets Its PS3 Hate On

How beautiful is that graphic? I will totally give a lapdance to whomever designed that graphic… within reason, of course.

Ok, down do business: following the insanity of the PS3 launch, Sony’s catching even more bad press… from the New York Times, no less. Seth Schiesel, one of the Times’ columnists, has posted his thoughts about the console and has been more than a little blunt when it comes to his final verdict:

Even after Microsoft took the lead in the video-game wars a year ago with its innovative and powerful Xbox 360, Sony blithely insisted that the PS3 would leapfrog all competition to deliver an unsurpassed level of fun.

Put bluntly, Sony has failed to deliver on that promise.

Measured in megaflops, gigabytes and other technical benchmarks, the PlayStation 3 is certainly the world’s most powerful game console. It falls far short, however, of providing the world’s most engaging overall entertainment experience. There is a big difference, and Sony seems to have confused one for the other.

Schiesel has an entire list of complaints against the riot-inducing console, including:

• The hefty price attached to both versions of the PS3

• A noticeable lack of HD cables in the box

• In order to use the PS3 wireless controllers, you have to plug it into the console via USB first (if you bring a controller over to a friend’s house, repeat the same process)

• Sony’s sluggish online store won’t let users relegate downloads to the background while performing other tasks at the same time

• A distinctly flawed online service

Now, some people might accuse Young Seth of being biased towards the Xbox 360, but I can understand where he’s coming from: after all the venom-laden press releases and quotes by Sony officials regarding Microsoft’s console and the way they treat their customers, it’s fairly comical that Sony’s system is far more expensive and (at the moment) problematic than the 360.

So, for those of us who had better things to do than camp out in line for days on end (read: jobs), take these words to heart:

As a practical matter, given the limited quantities Sony has been able to manufacture, the PlayStation 3 will surely remain sold out throughout the holiday season. If you can’t find one, don’t fret. Sony still has a lot of work to do.

Wow, you guys seriously hate the PS3 don’t you? I know I’ve sent you a tip regarding firmware issues with the Wii and yet I’ve not seen you post anything about it.

The PS3 and the 360 combined (so, pretty much the PS3 and Dead Rising) don’t come anywhere near the level of fun I’ve had in 2 days with my friend’s Wii.
Wii Sports bowling alone justifies that system’s purchase.

Wii are getting to that, Mr. Wolfe. ;p

Yeah, Wolfe, I’ve noticed a little bias towards Sony from the gaygamer writers. It’s all good though. Just wait till the day you can walk in and purchase one without a hassle, and I’m pretty sure Sony will have fixed a lot of the issues with a firmware update.

This “bias” people keep mewling about is fact stating, nothing more. EVERY game site is saying the same thing, Sony blundered this launch mythically. They’re treating their fans and users like dog crap and it’s about time the get what’s coming to them.

i’m not really a hater, but don’t see the point in the ps3 yet – resistance shall be nice, but i’m not really that much into fps-games.

and then, sony didn’t do much lately i could appreciate, so i admit bad news about sony and the ps3 make me smile slightly.

it’s likely i will have a ps3 in 2-3 years (if it’s even available in europe by then) but for now i really don’t want one – can’t wait to finally get my wii, though.

Silver R. Wolfe said:

Magic Pink, I don’t care that their posting bad news about the PS3. It’s just that they should be posting bad news about EVERY system, not just the ones they don’t like. :D

And there is a decidedly anti-Sony bias here. If you read the two PSP articles posted, both have quite a negative spin to them even though they both are good, if not neutral news.

Shin Gallon said:

Wolfe, maybe it’s because bad news about the PS3 is actually much more prevalant than for the other systems.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
