PS3 Not Playing Nice With High-Def

Awww...this looks like the freaking Wii!

Yeah. So after all that hubbub about high-definition and the superiority of the PS3 to all other consoles ever, it appears that Sony’s neglected to include high-definition support for the full range of available inputs. IGN reports that the PS3 is actually making high-definition games look worse on some displays; HDTVs that don’t support 1080p or 720p inputs will be downgraded to 480p…the same barely-better-than-480i resolution we’ve been seeing on DVDs and PS2 games (when using component cables) for years. (Meanwhile the Xbox 360 happily upscales 720p games to 1080i…hell, it’ll upscale just about anything.) IGN says:

As it turns out, gamers who own older HD sets that feature only 480i, 480p, and 1080i resolution input capabilities will have to settle for the display quality being downsized as the game boots in its 480p mode rather than upscaling the image from its more desirable 720p mode to the TV’s 1080i. We tested this development on older HDTV sets with games designed for 720p but not 1080i—Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, and Need for Speed Carbon. Sure enough, the system downshifted all four titles to 480p rather than moving up to 1080i.

The issue occurs whether you’re using an HDMI cable or component cables, and Sony has yet to comment, although everyone hopes it’s just a software question and not a hard-wired inability to up-convert to genuine high-definition instead of the second-lowest-possible common denominator. Boo!

I’m sorry, this is going to come across as really fanboi-ish, but it needs to be asked.

Is there anything this system actually does correctly?

Richie said:

Sure, Mudd, but those things don’t make for very interesting news.

That’s a good point. Successes are usually less newsworthy than failures.

Look, I’m buying a PS3 (eventually, after I get my Wii on)... but this is just ridiculous. Can Sony f this up ANY more? I’m sure it will all work out for them, but they’re turning into a laughing stock at this point.

And with the release date so close we can taste it, too. Poor Sony.

wait for a firmware update of sorts. Oh and just don’t buy a old TV.

No offense, but people weren’t that smart buying an HDTV that didn’t support 720p in the first place, being that the majority of HDTV broadcasts are done in that.

Oh yeah, not that many people are affected by this. It’ll probably be fixed in a firmware update anyways.

It’s not that people aren’t smart enough…its that the early HD tv’s…like ones from last year or 18 mos ago (esp. the affordable ones) had 1080i as an output. Trust me…most people don’t have HDTV’s…and they’re all excited about 1080p and BLueray but they get home and turn on the OLD sony standard Def tv…idiots. I guess I”ll buy a PS3 when I decide I want to buy a new HDTV…my 1080i and 480p tv I guess just isn’t going to cut it. Another reason to love my 360. Now lets just hope Microsoft uses that to it’s advantage in selling more 360’s.
