Publishers Pick Up Rights To Marvel Franchises

Let’s get something straight: Iron Man, in the mainstream Marvel Universe, is one of the most thoroughly unlikable characters to have his own series. Not only is he annoying, but he has one of the most convoluted histories available to a hero (damn dirty time-travelling origins!). But, admittedly, his armor does look good (sometimes) and… um… no, that’s about all he’s got going for him in the realm of “cool.” Ultimate Iron Man (the picture to the right), on the other hand, is awesome because he is written by Orson Scott Card and drawn by Andy Kubert. His origin is insanely unique and brilliant, and he is flawed just enough to be endearing. Now, based on the brilliance of Hollywood executives, would you care to guess which comic is being made into a movie starring Robert Downey Jr?
Now, despite the movie’s lame source material, it has a decent director attached… but Sega has announced that they’ve acquired the rights to publish the game. This does not fill me with hope. Aside from Chrome Hounds and Condemned, I can’t really think of a recent Sega game that I’ve enjoyed. Granted, no other information has been released about the Iron Man game… like who will actually be developing it or what the game is going to be like, but I’m not going to hold my breath and expect anything good to come about as a result of this union. Let’s just hope it’s better than Iron Man/X-O Manowar In Heavy Metal (which, sadly, I actually own a copy of).
Speaking of second-rate comic franchises, Take-Two Software picked up the rights to do Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. I’ll say this much: I’ve liked a lot of Take-Two’s games lately, and it’d be pretty hard to top the awfulness of the previous two FF titles. Because it’s going to be another movie-licensed game, I suppose I shouldn’t expect too much… but I’ll at least keep my fingers crossed on this one.
