Santorum Ad Promotes Pro-Wrestling, Condemns Violent Games

Sometimes it’s just stunning how weird politics can become. For Senator Rick Santorum, the two-term Republican encumbant from Pennsylvania, it seems that things are starting to get a little desperate and he’s pulling out every rabbit possible from his hat in order to close the gap between him and Democrat Bob Casey Jr.

Santorum’s latest TV ad has him in the middle of a wrestling ring, surrounded by speedo-clad combatants, while he brags about how he cooperated with Democrats like Barbra Boxer (all he says is they wrote a bill together protecting “open space”) and Hillary Clinton on her violent video game legislation. And then he knocks out some guy sneaking up on him. Is it funny? Kinda: it’s odd, definitely, and it’s hard not to chuckle just a little at the ad’s bizarre nature. However, I find it a little inappropriate that the guy’s bragging about how he’s keeping violent games out of kids’ hot little hands while he’s participating in a pro-wrestling match. To be honest, the good senator doesn’t strike me as someone who would let a game console in his house, let alone allow his children to even look at a controversial game.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the uber-conservative has alienated folks with his tactics. Santorum is the same person who has managed to anger a lot of people with his controversial statements over the past few years, especially when he practically touted his homophobia in an AP interview:

“If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual [gay] sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything.”

According to GamePolitics, political analyst Terry Madonna of Franklin & Marshall College said:

“This is the oddest campaign in the country right now. I don’t know why anyone is surprised at what Santorum does anymore.

She’s right, too: I certainly don’t know of any other political candidates who have accused their opponents of “aiding and abetting terrorism and genocide” because of several stock-holdings in the Middle-East. Nor can I think of anyone else who has compared this election year to 1930s Germany when the Nazis began their political rise to power.

My verdict? Santorum’s comments and behavior have finally landed him in enough hot water that he’s starting to become desperate and is making a last-ditch effort to attract votes with some flashy political illusions. I suspect that he only mentioned Clinton and her legislation against violent video games because, frankly, that issue is this election’s equivalent of gay marriage. I’d be surprised if he actually cares or knows about games any more than it’s something parents are concerned about. Also, it’s probably not a good sign that Hillary Clinton, who sounds like she’s bosom buddies with the senator in the ad, has actually donated $10,000 to his opponent’s campaign.

If that’s the way it really was in Washington, I’d be pretty psyched about politics.

I always thought that santorum was the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex.

Beat me to it, Mikey – I was coming in to spread the word.

Does anyone else wonder why there is the ”....and I approve this message” part at the end. If you’re in the ad and speaking in it, wouldn’t that imply that you approve it? Just curious.

Yeah, a little santorum now and then is unavoidable, but it does seem kinda gross to actually ADVERTISE it.
