Uh... I Don't Get It

There are just some things I don’t understand, and beauty pagents rank up towards the top of that list. To be perfectly honest, though, I never expected to see the invention of a video game-oriented beauty competition.
That’s right, it has just hit the web that Miss Video Game is now accepting applications from women. The competition will occur in stages, with online entries due by December 31. After a few rounds of online votes, the finalists will be flown out to scenic Montreal and the undefined final competition will take place in June, 2007.
While not entirely defined, the prizes for the winner will include:
• $1000 USD
• A trip for two to Riu Palace in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
• A brand-spanking new console (exactly what kind, we’re not sure)
• The winner will also be featured in an upcoming video game… once again, we’re not sure in what capacity.
Exactly what the contestants are expected to do hasn’t been explained yet, but if there’s any amount of cosplaying involved I’m not going anywhere near the pagent.

As I said over on Joystiq, where I first saw this story, I don’t think competitions like this (which are blatantly sexist) should exist.
Any girl could get into a fragfest tourney if she so chooses. Yay for enforcing the double standards.
“You can’t keep us out of your game because we’re girls, but you can’t play in ours because you’re guys.”
You—you’re making this up, right? GOTTA be a freakin’ joke, right? Please?
A) it’s probably backed by a publisher who wants to expand the interest in games among women and girls to then market to them
B)didn’t really sound like a beauty contest, but rather seemed to focus on skills and personality, which is kinda cool
C) you have to admit gaming is mostly a boys’ club, and I think it’s pretty hot that they’re putting on something that has the POTENTIAL to be girl-positive and consciousness raising
Skorpyobrat: The application on the page requests a picture. If it’s not about looks, why even ask?
I also noticed that the website looks very amateur—spelling errors abound, and if they actually have any sponsors, they don’t bother saying who they are. I really gotta question whether this thing is legit.
I’m entered and though I’m not about a boobie contest, the owner swears this is about gaming skills.
I hope to have your votes in January though.
i will send u to the hell
@Najib: Huh?
As I stated over at joystiq, I hate this idea more than I hate celery. And I really hate celery.
I really hope it turns out to be a suprise with the focus honestly on gaming skills, and not a ‘seperate the hot gamer chicks from the uglies’, but I am most certainly not counting on it.
Ugh.
