Worldwide D&D Game Day

Last Saturday was a good day to be a nerd. Over the weekend, thousands of gamers across the world took part in the third annual Worldwide Dungeons & Dragons Game Day. With more than 25,000 participants in 1,105 events on six out of seven continents (no love for those penguins down in Antarctica), D&D players across many lands played up some D&D Miniatures, Three Dragon Ante, Dragon Chess, and took on the Expedition to Castle Ravenloft tie-in module “The Curse of Gethin Abbey.”

Besides folks crammed into game stores in several countries, a few more interesting events took place. D&D co-creator Dave Arneson headed up one of the larger programs in Minneapolis Minnesota, author R.A. Salvatore served as a delegate to a gathering Lucca Italy, there was even a small crowd in Bagdad Iraq. But easily the highest profile deal for WWDDGD took place in Hollywood California were some celebrity gamers were on hand for the conclusion of the first annual D&D Fan Film Contest: most notably Brian Poshen (Just Shoot Me, Dumb & Dumber) and Queer as Folk star Hal Sparks (I thought he was just cute before, after this I might be in love).

You can check out the film fest’s winners’, Riley Swift and Jennifer Stratford, film below, as well as a few more pictures of the Hollywood festivities after the jump.

Supposedly, Brian Poshen was overheard saying “My DM only plays AD&D, so I haven’t gotten into 3.5 yet. That’s a whole other world,” with Sparks commenting “Brian and I are going to keep in touch, and I offered to DM a 3.5 campaign for them, so they can see what that’s like,” soon after. That’s what it’s all about boys and girls.

As for the winners of the film fest, Riley Swift and Jennifer Stratford took home the top prize, a metric ton of video editing and D&D swag, for their film World of Adventure, which you can check out below. You can still check out all the D&D Film Fest’s other entries over at gamevideos.com.

Here’s also a shout out to the winners’ friends, who did a very LARPer friendly musical retelling of the story of King Arthur from Morgan Le Fey’s point of view. (Wow… did I just write that.) Check it out:

Aside from all the videos, here’s a few shots from the Hollywood festivities, including a few of Hal Sparks (swoon).

Hurrah! Hal Sparks! It’s too bad that Peter Paige didn’t show up as well, because that would be amazingly awesome. Hal always struck me as the nerdy type, and adding DnD to his list only makes him hotter.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
