Best Buy Holding Onto Wii Until December 17th - PS3 Still Scarce [UPDATE]
GoNintendo had a little bird tell them that Best Buy stores have been instructed to hold all Wiis until the 17th of December. What a load of crap, eh? Then again, Best Buy has never been afraid to s**t on their customers, before. Click the pic to read the memo. I call on all of you who want a Wii to wiivolt against Best Buy…or just wait 4 days and have a go at it, plus it’s good for the economy. ;p
I should also note, that each store is guaranteed a minimum of 40 systems. Does that increase your chances of getting one? Not really, unless you get up at the crack o’ dawn. Then, as a side note, Best Buy employees are told not to hold PlayStation 3 units, and anyone caught doing so will “be dealt with accordingly.” Oh my…. You hear that Best Buy employees? Better not do it or they’ll send Brian Peppers after you!!
[UPDATE]: Kotaku reports that GameStop has also been told to hold onto their Wii(s) until the 17th in order to spur Christmas sales. OY!! Will the jackassery stop!? That’s it, I’m going to take a train ride in New Orleans’ City Park and blow off some steam….
Best Buy holding Wii shipments until the 17th [GoNintendo]

what a crock of s***... yet i’m not surprised by this… i think best buy has fun watching people wait in line for hours and then go ape s*** and act like animals trying to get their hands on the latest video game console… i’m just glad i got my wii already at target.
Best Buy Canada is doing the same thing with the Wii’s up here, however, we are getting them on Friday along with a few PS3. Should make for an interesting weekend.
Good to see they proofread their memos.
::eyeroll::
Friends don’t let friends shop at Best Buy.
I want a Wii, but I don’t want to have to wake up at 4am to get one :\
Probably just wait till after Christmas and bear the “OMG I LOVE MY WII” from all my bastard friends who have one D:
I’m so glad my eBay auction doesn’t end until Sunday night. That means everyone’s hopes will be raised one last time to get that Wii before Christmas, only to be crushed once again. Thats when people will get desperate and turn to their faithful eBay, paying outrageous prices to get their hands on one of these coveted boxes of joy so their child doesn’t cry come Christmas morning.
Thank you Best Buy for making my holiday wishes come true (A spankin new Wii+Zelda for $0 the day it came out, what else could a gay gamer ask for… well, besides an extra wii-mote and maybe some of those nifty pink Wii-mote condoms)
Gotta love capatalism!!!
I actually work at best buy. Course we haven’t actually gotten in Wii’s in like forever.
But that sounds around right. It’s not just the wii’s either. We were told to hold the DS and DS lites as well until sunday.
I know personally I don’t much care if we hold them. I’m just sick and tired of answering the same questions and telling people we are sold out of PS3 Wii’s and the DS.
They did this before. On black friday, every Best Buy in the country saved their Wii’s until that Sunday. They had gotten in over their head by guaranteeing that they’d have a few that Sunday, and so they the put a freeze on sales.
ONE note of kudos to Best Buy. They at least had an enforced policy not allowing employees to buy the machines. A few of my local Blockbuster/GameRush stores received a fairly steady stream of Wii’s which were then swiftly purchased by the store’s employees.
One more note. Has anyone noticed that Best Buy makes lying to their customers the regular method for holding merchandise in this way? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve asked, “Well do you HAVE one in the back?” If I successfully catch a rookie employee off guard, I’m met with a stammering of “uh, um, we don’t, um…”
Sooon this resistance to lying is successfully broken, though, as I’ve caught managers in bold faced lies. Having been told by an employee “yes we have some in back but I have to check with the manager, cuz um I don’t know if i can sell them.” Then,
Manager: “Well, we can’t sell it til the street date.”
Me: “The street date was last week.”
Manager: “Oh, well, we actually don’t have any, I’m sorry.”
Riiiight.
Nonono. They are NOT doing it by choice. Nintendo has told them to hold them. NINTENDO! The employees do NOT enjoy the constant bitching by customers and crap. Nintendo has told them to hold it, to NOT sell them because it is a NINTENDO sale. Thats the problem with getting your facts from a 3rd source. ITS WRONG.
I wouldn’t have to if they just told me that.
40 whole units per store? I guess I’m not feeling too bad about sucking it up and hitting ebay last week for my second Wii after all.
Nintendo told Best Buy and Best Buy ONLY to hold on to the consoles? It doesn’t matter WHEN the Wiis are stocked, they are going to be sold. The ONLY person to benefit from holding them until Sunday (when the Sunday Ads are released) is Best Buy. So the only people who stand to make MORE money from holding Wiis is Best Buy basically due to false advertising, because by the time anyone gets the newspaper, reads about the Wii, they will already be purchased and placed on eBay.
Now if we were talkin Sony, I wouldn’t doubt it. But I just can’t see Nintendo singling out Best Buy to help THEIR holiday sales…
I don’t understand what everyone is b*tching about. I have contacted plenty of stores that are planning to do the same thing for the same reasons Best Buy is. In my opinion I’m glad. I’m tired of hearing that a store is getting a shipment to go join a line of maybe only twenty people and find that they received a shipment of 2 Wiis. If you want the Wii before Christmas be prepared to wait in a line. I’d rather wait in a line for a store who has been saving and I don’t have to worry about them running out before I get to the front. So what if Best Buy is doing this to make money for themselves? They could sell them when they get them and not worry about selling out (like anyplace is really worried about having a surplus of Wiis), but this way they can make more sales from people who weren’t planning to buy one, while we still stand to have a better chance of getting a Wii. Capitalism benefits everyone, a corporation does what they can to make money for themselves but if they hurt their consumers then they won’t get their money. Plan on many stores doing this Sunday. Honestly I hope my local Walmart has some at midnight so I won’t have to drive an hour to any of the other stores that would have them, but at least I know if I really want one before mid-January, then I can fall back on Best Buy.
Hmm … I have some liquid cash laying around. Maybe I should go by 5 or so of them early Sunday, then return them the day after Christmas.
ummm i work at futureshop in canada, and we are the same company. Now i dont know if b/c we’re futureshop things are different but we arent holding anything, they are sold when they come in….so sorry to crush anyones hopes…..
ps i want a wii too so im hoping for a big shipment on the 17th
