GayGamer vs. Sony

I would like to address the many comments we’ve gotten lately about our “Sony bashing.” Let me just start off by saying that personally, I don’t hate Sony. Far from it. Out of the three main consoles I own, Wii, PS2 and Xbox 360, I play on my PS2 the most. There is no end of amazing games, some of which are long time favorites of mine.

The truth is, though, that whether you love or hate Sony, you must admit (because they’ve admitted it) that they really botched the PS3 launch. There are also significant numbers to show that sales on the PSP have been very low in comparison to other hand held systems. I would LOVE to be able to print something great about the PS3, and in future when I finally get one (hint, hint, Sony reps!) and there are some great games for it, I’m sure Sony will get its fair share of GayGamer love.

What is also true is that one person’s article is their opinion, not necessarily the opinion of everyone who writes for this site. I will admit that in general, all of us around here were very disappointed by the way Sony chose to handle themselves over the months leading up to and including their launch. We are not alone in this feeling. A quick look around the internet at other blog and news sites will show you the same thing.

But I reiterate: I don’t hate Sony. I’m willing to give the PS3 a fair chance. So, like my soul sister Eliza did before me, I ask you for stories of Sony love. Did you get a PS3? Is it the greatest gaming system ever? Let us know in the comments and I will gladly post them in an article for everyone to read and comment on.

I, also, love the PS2, but I have no plans to pick up a PS3. It’s expensive, I don’t care about Blueray movies, and I don’t really care about the graphics. But I did have this experience the other day.

I was in Target and noticed they had a playable PS3 demo. It had a basketball game (who cares) and an off-road racing game. I tried the racing game.

The graphics were meh. It was a clear picture, but that might just have been the HD monitor. But there was also definite seams and tearing in the textures.

The game itself ran fairly fast, and the controls were okay. Until, that is, I figured out how to turn on the tilt-controller steering. (Hint: It’s in the pause menu.)

Wow! Sony may have implemented it as a gimmick, but it completely changed the gameplay, and the programmers did a great job of making it seem just right. It was a blast.

So, I still won’t be picking up a PS3, but I’ll be keeping my ears open to see what other people are doing with the tilt controls.

Kevin, Target uses very shoddy monitors for most of their kiosks. It was the monitor.

Don’t mind the fanboys. It is in all of our best interests if all 3 do well. Having said that. I love my 360 and got a Wii which is a fun as hell party game system with Zelda thrown in for hardcore gamers. PS3…..meh. Give it a year to try to shine like the 360 is now and hopefully Sony will drop their arrogant attitude and show their fans love not scorn.

I could piss and moan all I want about Sony’s failed ethics and business practices, but I’ll still be heading down to eBay for a used console when Silent Hill 5 rolls around anyway. None of the Big 3 are ever going to get my exclusive ‘loyalty’.

Sony is the king of failed lock-in attempts with their formats, and the bottom line is that they botched this fight in the Console Wars™. Tell the Sony fanboys to crawl back into their holes at PS2OWNZ where they belong; they’ve been whining all season about Sony-hating on every blog, news post and forum they can find. Boo-hoo, nobody else is as brainwashed as you are! Sorry this blog doesn’t have enough Sony slant for them, because that’s all it’s really about, whether they’ll admit it or not.

I also adore my PS2. It’s my most used system.

The facts are that Sony could not have screwed up the PS3 launch more if they tried and they’ve treated their fans and developers like crap since the launch of the PS2.

Maybe the Sony reps will see all the bad press the PS3 is getting and try to change something? Probably not.

Game-Boi said:

There is no shame in reporting the facts as they are. Sony messed up with the ps3 launch and has yet to really deliver on the PSP. That’s just how it is. If anyone here thinks that GayGamer writers are being too harsh, they should hear what developers and publishers are saying to each other behind sony’s back.

The ps2 is still a great system with a huge library and awesome exclusives that make other fanbois jealous. I’ll continue to buy more ps2 through next year (much like some others here), but not shelling out the cash for a ps3 for a long time. Until then my DS, Wii, and eventual 360 purchase will keep me more than occupied.

This “anti-Sony bias” whining is getting annoying.

When Sony gets their act together and respects its past customers, like me, then they’ll get the respect they lost these past 2 years.

Microsoft and Nintendo are at least trying to please their customers. Take a page from either of their books thus far, Sony.

Seriously this isn’t some vast conspiracy to ruin Sony’s reputation. They’ve done all of the work themselves.

Now that PS3 apparently isn’t “better” than Xbox 360, so far, we’re supposed to all pretend like it is to please the early adopters? I don’t think so.

I call it like it is and so do 90% of the journalists/ bloggers thus far who have had hands on experience with the system.

I’ll stick with my PS2 and Wii for now. Maybe Sony will iron out their issues before it becomes the last nail in the coffin. Then maybe I’ll upgrade.

As for the “exclusives” coming to PS3. I wouldn’t hold my breath. I smell ports to make up for the costly HD era we are entering.

When Nintendo was messing up with the N64, these same journalists and bloggers were all over them like a fly on a hotdog. Now it’s Sony’s turn to take a beating for their stupidity in dealing with the PS3 up to and including launch.

Fanboys get over yourselves.

I have to say I finally saw a PS3 demo. I was impressed. There was a 360 demo right next to it, and it didn’t seem as crisp. So I currently only have a PS2, Wii, GC, and DS. No, I’m not a Nintendo fanboi, but it might look like it judging from that list. I’m finally breaking down and buying an HD set, and after seeing the demo, I have to admit I want a PS3. I hope by the time I actually get around to buying one they’ll have worked out the bugs and have a decent selection of games. Until then, I’ll keep playing my PS2 (after I finish Wii Zelda that is.)

egh, how about this. you can hate the ps3 and sony all you want…it’s inevitable…but please can you all stop fucking bitching about the price of the damn machine?

seriously, do you somehow feel like someone is cheating you because the ps3 is just SO EXPENSIVE? how long have you known it was going to cost this much? do you realize how much is packed into the console and sony loses money for every system they produce?

if so then your bitching shouldn’t be about how expensive it is…it’s a nice piece of hardware with great capabilities…you should simply be saying that you aren’t interested in a bluray drive or what it has to offer. that’s fine…it’s not the system for you. just don’t buy it. go plunk down over a grand on your HD television.

so the launch was lame. we’ll all have to wait before we get one…or atleast until sony gets the initial kinks worked out (like with every other console). you see, this is what MOST people do with new systems…especially ones that cost 600 dollars…so i guess this is why i dont understand why you all are freaking the fuck out and slamming sony like they’ve deceived you and ruined themselves forever.

i am not a sony fanboy…the Wii looks fun to me, but i think in 5 years it’s going to have a hard time competing…and i still have faith in the promise of the ps3.

gaygamer.net i want to say thank you for giving a shit about what your readers have to say…i haven’t seen anyone else bitching about your past ps3 posts so i guess i’m the asshole…but thanks for the effort. i support ye.

everyone enjoy your Wiis.

voltRis said:

Considering none of Sony’s proprietary formats have ever caught on with the general public, and considering the PS2 early revision drives shitting out, AND considering the PSX’s early revision laser-sleds giving out, can you blame anyone for not wanting to plunk down 600$ for what chances are a future paperweight? That’s not even mentioning Sony’s notoriously worthless, yet premium-cost audio hardware since the early nineties..

They’ve been screwing over consumers with cheap, faulty hardware for over ten years. They wait until a team of lawyers send a subpoena before they decide to fix ANYTHING. As far as my thoughts are concerned, this has NOTHING to do with the console, and EVERYTHING to do with the company’s tactics. Cheap hardware at a premium price! If it fails, wait for a class action suit just like the PS2 until we “decide” to fix anything out of the “goodness of our hearts”!

That’s horse shit, and I’m ashamed that anyone would be apologetic to that. I don’t care if Jesus, Mary and Joseph are packed into that console. They aren’t going to fix any hardware problems with wireless updates!

@Davem
please can you all stop fucking bitching about the price of the damn machine?
Maybe until a price drop. And even, that’s not a promise. Listen, $500 is a lot of money. And that $500 doesn’t even get you game. Sorry the rest of us are poor. Congrats on being able to afford/find one, though. Just for some perspective, people are still bitching about the price of a PSP.

seriously, do you somehow feel like someone is cheating you because the ps3 is just SO EXPENSIVE?
No. It’s just really fucking expensive to play the lastest version of “Gran Turismo: The version without cars!”, thanks to Sony’s new Beta-Ray format and miniature Oompa Lompa’s incased in the hardware.

how long have you known it was going to cost this much?
Since the press event where they said there would only be one SKU and poked fun at MS for the same shit they would later pull on fans. In the time between that announcement and now, inflation has not dulled the pain of the ps3’s pricetag. Sorry.

do you realize how much is packed into the console and sony loses money for every system they produce?
Yes. On a side note, the SR-71 Blackbird is one of the first aircraft to be shaped to reduce radar signature, but I think I’ll still drive my Ford Focus.

Sorry, but the ps3 is expensive, even with all the extra features. It’s a valid reason for not purchasing it and a valid point that people should be criticizing Sony for.

For some people the lack of “real” HD is a valid reason not to buy a Wii, because they are HD-whores (no shame in that, for those of you that are). Others mock MS for the Sega-CD that they are about to pull on 360 owners (let’s face it, you know that HDDVD drive will be used for games).

The point is that if people didn’t talk about these kinds of issues, we’d still be using GBA’s only having installing an Afterburner on it or using Sony’s broken PS2 method for online gaming.

People bitch…Companies sorta listen…products get sorta improved.

You know what the funniest thing about the SR-71 was? It leaked fuel when it wasn’t flying :)

I’m a Sony fan boy, and I’d like to buy a PS3. Just not yet.

I’m still playing through FFXII on my PS2, and there are no good games out for the PS3.

Sony, and those that put out games for the PS series make the kinds of games that I like to play.

Yeah, it is expensive. I don’t reasonably forsee the price dropping soon. So I guess I’ll just have to save up for it.

I heart my Wii. I also heart my PS2 (and DS, and Gamecube, etc…)

But when I bought my PS2, it was $129. When I got my Gamecube, it was $149 and included a Gameboy Player. Maybe I’ll get a PS3 when it hits $200, or a 360 when it hits $179…. gotta acknowledge inflation….

On the other hand, I bought my DS and Wii at launch. Why? Because they were different. Really different. Not just “You can use the controller as a steering wheel in racing games” different (I haven’t bought Excite Truck, don’t care, probably never will), not just “It looks awesome on the HDTV you won’t buy for another year or two” different (I play my Gamecube and PS2 on a 7” LCD and I think they look great), but “It will make you jump around in your living room like a little kid” different. Well, or “It will make you scribble furiously like an autistic kid in public” different, in the case of the DS.

I dunno whether the novelty will wear off after a year…. 2 years later, the DS makes the GBA and PSP look like runny poop in my book, and it’s all because of that touch screen. I’ve had PDA’s with touchscreens for years, most with better resolution than the DS, but gaming on them always sucked. The DS is far slower than my Zaurus, yet the games are incomparably better on the DS.

For this generation, Sony bet that most gamers were early adopters who couldn’t bear anything less than the newest home theater stuff in addition to the prettiest games. Microsoft bet that most gamers wanted an incremental upgrade and would pay a little extra for it. Nintendo bet that there were millions of people waiting to be converted into gamers by a system that doesn’t require you to be a total tool in order to play it.

I don’t know who’s right, but I do know that I can wait a couple years for the price to come down on “same old games, only prettier”, yet I will pay ebay prices for a totally new experience.

I call shenanigans on 3 consoles being good for the games.

3 different consoles would be good.

3 consoles where 2 offer identical features (blu-ray is not a gaming feature, it’s a storage medium!) but are so different to develop for that going cross platform almost costs twice as much, means that we get half the game. Let’s face it: you don’t expect that publishers will gladly shell out double to hit all the market, or be happy with just half the market… do you?

The market would be healthier with just the 360 and the Wii. They have overlapping but different demographics, and naturally lend themselves to different games, i.e. you can get away with less presentation on a Wii if you have a great idea, and you can get away with a lesser idea if you have great presentation on the 360.

As a hardware platform, what does the PS3 really bring to the gaming table that the 360 doesn’t already cover?

Viva Wii60!

@Game-Boi…i hate this whole “cut and paste, respond to whatever the hell i want to while ignoring the rest of what you say” kind of response, but alas:

“Sorry the rest of us are poor. Congrats on being able to afford/find one, though.”

I hate to break it to you, dude…but things cost money. some things cost more money than others…that’s when you can’t buy them. get a job. but to clarify, i cant find a ps3…nor would i want to…i’m not unaware that there are problems with the ps3…but i dont endlessly bash it for things that i knew of 6 monthes ago either.

‘It’s just really fucking expensive to play the lastest version of “Gran Turismo: The version without cars!”’

egh, yes, it is too expensive right now to play the buggy/subpar launch games (like with every other system). wait it out with the rest of us. listen, if heavenly sword comes out and blows or nothing improves…i’ll join the hatred with you.

“Since the press event where they said…”

so you’ve known.

“Yes. On a side note, the SR-71 Blackbird…”

ok, so you’re comparing revolutionary aircraft to a ford focus…great argument, dude. the ps3 is more expensive for a reason…you cant deny that. for what’s in the hardware…it’s a deal. that’s just the truth. it’s also true that these things don’t automatically make playing games fun; i’m just saying give sony and the developers a chance.

but to all of this i say feh…i’m going to get a wii.

defeated.
