Gran Turismo HD Cancelled, More Or Less

Gamasutra reports that work on the PS3 game Gran Turismo HD has been called to a stop, although Sony and developer Polyphony Digital will be giving the material produced so far away for free in Japan. Gran Turismo HD helped fuel the fire of the microtransaction debate currently raging (well, whimpering, anyway) over the recent strategy adopted by all three major console developers and their online content services. Many were infuriated when reports surfaced that GT HD would up the microtransaction ante by not shipping with any cars or trucks: each vehicle would need to be purchased separately…as a microtransaction.
Gran Turismo HD was essentially a high-definition port of the PS2’s Gran Turismo 4 with a playable demo of the PS3’s work-in-progress, Gran Turismo 5. Thankfully, that game has not been canceled – in fact, GT 5 is now receiving full attention and is scheduled for 2008.
It’s a conciliatory gesture to make the GT HD content available for free download (with 10 cars and one track included), although you have to wonder what the quality will be like, playing an abandoned version of an unfinished game. We’ll have to ask our Japanese friends about that, however, since Japan is the only region currently graced with the offer.
Is this, perhaps, a sign that we’re reaching a microtransaction equilibrium? Like it or not, the scheme looks like it’s here to stay – hopefully our corporate overlords are realizing that there are limits to the number of pennies they can wring from their customers. Middle ground might be nice.

Personally, I don’t see myself ever buying anything with microtransactions. I want the whole game, or episodic content like Half Life 2’s expansions, but don’t tell me that “letting” me buy games a part at a time is a good thing for me, because it isn’t, and I’ll have no part of it.
Where did you get the information that GT5 would ship with 10 cars and 1 track?

Will: my mistake. It’s the free Japanese version of GT HD that comes with 10 cars and 1 track.
