Indie Game Fun: Sketchfighter 4000 Alpha

Remember the days of doodling in your notebook while you were supposed to be taking History notes? The teacher’s voice would drop into muted trumpet sounds as your pen would furiously sketch out the stretches of your imagination. SketchFighter 4000 Alpha has brought your grammar school notebook to life on the Mac.
From the site:
SketchFighter 4000 Alpha redefines “retro” by bringing together the imaginative pen and paper sketches from your youth with a killer resolution independent OpenGL graphics engine. SketchFighter also boasts a unique synthesis of exploration and action game play, which has you alternately blasting cute little lady bugs into oblivion and then puzzling your way through the hand-drawn challenges presented to you.
The game also boasts a level editor to keep the intergalactic paper battle going after the single player campaign is over.
Sketchfighter is great. I admire developers who take a visual style and milk it for everything it can offer. Gaming is branching into two distinct avenues, one being ultra realistic where you can count the pores on your character, the other being an impressionistic style where you can explore the world through various filters. When I saw this game, I immediately thought of games like Rez, Killer 7, and Okami, all of which are impressive examples of the style complementing the gameplay exquisitely.

I’d love to see someone do a role-playing game in this style.
Yes! Imagine bringing a D&D game back to graph paper…
This…game…ROCKS!
Freaking awesome, gonna try this out…
Ah! Ambrosia’s making it… I miss those days when I was an Ambrosia Fanatic and actually owned a Mac… I remember making levels for Avara in Claris Works, and playing ridiculously unbalanced games of Ares through Game Ranger… :sigh: I’m glad to see they’ve still got their magic.
Sweeeeet.
