Multiplayer Light Cycles With ArmageTron Advanced

ArmageTron Advanced

I remember the ethereal glow of the Tron arcade cabinet, like a beacon pointed toward the future of gaming. It was amazing back then, black cabinet with black light glowing embellishments, and that huge stick. It seemed like so many different games to choose from, but there was really only one that caught my fancy, that was light cycles. Simple, understated, classic light cycles battles were my bread and butter. I couldn’t get enough of it.

Now we have ArmageTron Advanced to quench our thirst for light cycle goodness. It has been updated into full 3D, instead of the top-down arcade style. The game is free and available on every operating system, and as an added bonus, there is a free online mode that’s quick and easy to use. The game is also customizable to the point of changing whatever you want about the game.

If anyone has played Tron or Snake, you pretty much know how to play this game. Trap your opponent in his own light cycle trail, or make him crash into your own.

ArmageTron Advanced is a free multiplayer game that you will come back to again and again with it’s addictive gameplay, tight controls, and multiplayer madness. Check it out, did I mention, it’s free?

Tron was really ahead of its time. Its level design (beat a set of minigames in whichever order you choose, not knowing which one is which when you choose them) foreshadowed games like Rayman Raving Rabbids, 25 years earlier.

It was the first game I know of to use digital and analog controls (the spinner) simultaneously, meaning it was impossible to port to any home systems of the day.

It was also one of the first games to have a whole soundtrack by a well-known composer, even if she did originally write it for the movie.

And while I did well at other games before it, it was the first game I seriously practiced at, to the point where I beat the world record (only to be crushed a few weeks later when the new issue of Joystik came out revealing someone had already beaten mine before I could even report it.)

Yeah, I loved that game. One of these days I’m gonna set up some flight stick with my USB spinner and get it working in MAME…. though it would also be pretty good to port to the Wiimote-nunchuk combo, if the spinner code got replaced with “point where you want to shoot” code.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
