Nintendo DS Liter?

Lindsay Lohan may be tired of rumors, but I’m not. The whisperings of little rumor gnomes has led some to the speculation that Nintendo plans to release yet another incarnation of its fantastically successful double-fun handheld sometime next year in Japan. According to these self-same whispering rumor gnomes, the redesign incorporates a screen size increase – from 3 inches to 3.5 or 3.8 inches.
Is a DS upgrade the craziest idea ever in the history of mankind? Naw. Could the screens on the DS Lite be a smidge bigger? Yup. Is that alone reason enough to expect consumers to buy a third iteration of your handheld? Well, I’d say no, but Nintendo’s done it before. And whenever I whip out my Game Boy Micro and the crazy coke-bottle glasses I have to wear to see its itty-bitty screen, I remember the awesome power Nintendo has to control my brain.
Rumor: Nintendo DS screen size increase in 2007 [Joystiq]

I didn’t buy the Game Boy Micro, and I don’t think I’d buy the “DS Liter” unless it had a selling point well beyond “20% larger screen”.
In the case of the DS Lite, it was like, “1000% brighter screen”. Not saying they couldn’t find some way to make me buy it, but as the rumors stand, I wouldn’t.
I hope it’s just a rumor, I’d hate to see a better version of my DS Lite …
I doubt this is true, but knowing me I’d buy every new and improved DS Lite they come out with.
If this were to be true, I might actually upgrade from my original MarioKart DS.
Maybe…
Nintendo sold well over 100 million GBAs. They’ve only managed just over 20 million DSs so far. There are PLENTY people who have yet to buy a DS, so assuming Ninty have manufactured say 30 million, they have a prior user base of at least same again to go.
If they can get a sales surge by introducing a new compatible model (presumably with better economics for them, despite the improvements), then what the heck should stop them?
I’d say bigger screens, better speakers and even longer battery life are all possible worthwhile upgrades without changing the architecture.
I don’t own a DS yet, so this would work out well for me.
(Though I shudder to think how many iterations of the Gameboy I own…)
