Nintendo Recalls Wii Remote Straps

Apparently, the powers that be at Nintendo have heard the cries of the public and their recently broken TVs, laptops and ceiling fans and have decided to recall the Wii remote straps.

Honestly, I’ve had no trouble with my straps and I attribute a lot of these broken ones to people acting like spazmos, flinging the remote around and letting it go. But there’s no doubt that this is going to continue to be a problem, so Nintendo is stepping up to the plate and taking care of the issue.

All you need to do is fill out a form on the Nintendo website and they will ship you a new strap. They expect to begin shipments around Dec. 21 and will take 5 to 9 days for delivery. You will receive an email once your new straps have shipped.

Funnily enough, on the request form page Nintendo encourages you to not only replace your strap, but to be sure and read their Safety Information for Playing Wii. They know obviously know where the real problem lies.

I think they’re also sick of the media attention this is getting. I’ve got friends asking me if my Wiimote strap has broken yet. I tell them no, because I don’t play my Wii like a complete spaz. You can still get some full sword-swining motion without the damn thing flying out of your hands. Of course, that also might because I’m relatively in shape and a few slashes doesn’t cause my hands to burst into sweat.

I don’t expect mine to break either when I play. However, then again, I do have the thin straps, and I’d hate to lose my new TV from a party guest. So I ordered the replacements.

To quote someone: I didn’t say people are stupid. What I said was, remove all warning labels and let natural selection take over.

Once again, I need to point out that your wrist strap can break without the user being an “idiot”, “retard”, or “spazmo”, as some people seem to think. Ours broke with normal use.

Since Nintendo is admitting the issue and is issuing a new wrist strap, I think it’s safe to say this isn’t user error. If yours hasn’t broken, congrats, but let’s all stop patting ourselves on the back for being “normal” because our wrist strap works.

Spaz: You will note that I said “a lot of these broken ones” not “all”. In my personal experience, a co-worker’s remote broke when an over zealous and drunk roommate let go of the remote. Certainly the straps were not as sturdy as they could have been, but user error is still a large factor.

I’m with Mikey, mine hasnt broke, but I play on a 2 month old 32 inch lcd tv (Hey, its big and expensive when you work part time at a gamestop) and I’d rather not risk it, period. I’m thinking of doubling up the straps actually, using a new and old strap on each wiimote. That will never break! Though I have to say the process to sign up for the recall was a pain…they made me get up from bed to look at my serial number. :( Its cold over there!

I haven’t had any problems at all, and neither has my sister, but I requested some extra straps anyway.

I wonder if Nintendo’s doing anything about those whose TVs were broken or who suffered other damages.

I’m w/ Mikey as well. I’d rather get some extra straps just in case people come over. I personally don’t see how the straps can break.
