Playstation 4 Around The Corner (For Real This Time!)

Remember how, last week, some analyst postulated that Sony may be getting out of the console (ahem) game? Once that rumor hit the fan, everyone else was all over it like hags on Clay Aiken because… well, to be perfectly honest, I think it’s because they just wanted to jump on the bandwagon of kicking Sony while it’s down.

It seems that this was a rumor which was totally false, because Sony has revealed that a PS4 is on the way, and much sooner than we’re expecting. According to the report, the PS4 won’t be out until at least 2010, but I’d be really surprised if it came along so soon:

Therefore, by taking this quote completely out of context, we have deduced that there’s a mere three year wait for some next-next-gen goodness, which can be easily tide over by FFXII, GTA and SotC. However, were we to actually do our job, we would let you know that in the interim Sony is planning on firmware upgrades for the PS3 to expand media center capability, allow third party applications, and to support third party controllers similar to that of the Wii.

I have to admit that I’m not really expecting a new Sony system any time soon. The PS3 seems pretty damn powerful, and I don’t see developers stretching its processing limits within three years.

Don’t bother picking up a PS3, PS4 is right around the corner [Engadget]

Wait a sec. Sony has been trumpeting the PS3 as being a “future-proof” console that will have an extended lifespan, supposedly doubling the normal 5-year run to 10. If they release the PS4 any time before 2012, the cost of the PS3 is even more unjustified (and even more so for the PS4, which migth be even pricier).

I honestly find it impossible to care at all about this right now. Between the fact that this generation of games has just started, the last gen not being totally tapped out yet, and the vast amounts of old-school goodness coming via the emulation features of the Wii, thinking about a console that likely won’t come out until 2010 or (more likely) 2012 or so, is just useless.

The (seemingly) best games in both visuals and gameplay come out at the end of a console’s lifespan. For that reason alone, I wish console manufacturers would stretch out the lifespan a wee bit longer. How are we ever going to see all those extra cell-processor teraflops if they jump ship before limitations have been reached?

The 360 is powerful, but its a western machine with western games – and noisy as hell – and I don’t like it.

The PS3 is powerful and expensive and features a soon-to-be dead on arrival media disk media support – and I don’t like it.

The Wii is Gamecube 1.5, so I’m sure it could have been cheapier and STILL provide a profit. And besides Zelda and Trauma Center, what will there be? And I’m suspicious.

Mario Galaxies has been postponed twice already: lets be honest, that game on this years gameshows was a tech demo – and now they’re looking for ways to make a full fledged game.

Ditto for Gran Turismo HD.

By God I wish Sega and Bandai would just do a new console.

These manufacturers are playing jokes on us. Sony’s marketing and bully techniques to drive Microsoft and Nintendo out of the way are disgusting. Microsoft has its heart in the right place but is failing in a big way. Nintendo is aiming for the casual and non-gamer and is about the lose the hardcore and frequent gamer.

Tired of all this BS. Getting a Wii and giving Nintendo a year to prove itself.

Cheers

Sony is hardly ‘down’.

I think we should all start saving now for the PS4 since it will probably be around $3K.

Of course there’s going to be a PS4 within 5 years. When it gets to be 2009 and Nintendo announces the Wii 2 with PS3-level graphics for less than the PS3 still costs then, and Microsoft announces the Xbox 720 which makes the PS3 look like the PS1, stealing the high end, does anyone seriously think Sony’s going to keep going, “We think customers will find our existing console superior to these new consoles” and let them steal the market?

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
