PS3 Production Problems All Better Now?

Now that Sony has admitted its Day One PS3 target shipments were not met, some of the ambient PS3 frustration seems to have subsided. Also contributing to the lull in the PS3 frenzy is Sony’s claim that all manufacturing problems have been resolved and that the company intends to fulfill its commitment to shipping one million consoles by the end of the year. According to an official statement by SCEA Senior Director of Corporate Communications, Dave Karraker:

”...early manufacturing issues [have been] resolved and we do remain focused on having one million PS3s in the pipeline by December 31, 2006.”

“We will continue to utilise airfreight delivery for PlayStation 3 to assure a steady stream of systems for North American consumers through the end of the year.”

Now that we know that the 197,000 PS3s that sold during November were less than half of SCEA’s 400,000 launch day target, the distance the PS3 has to cover in a matter of weeks is considerable, and I’m not going to hold my breath. However it’s worth noting that while the Xbox 360 moved 511,000 during that same month, the PS2 sold 664,000 units, almost as many as both combined. And while the DS outsold the PSP (918,000 to 412,000) overwhelmingly, that PSP number is about double the sales from the same period last year:

“The six year old PlayStation 2 continues to dominate the market, outselling all other computer entertainment systems in November, including much newer systems from the competition… These figures clearly demonstrate the strength of the PlayStation family of products in the US… [They] bode very well for SCEA as it offers a computer entertainment system for every taste and budget this holiday season.”

So Sony looks set to weather this storm more gracefully than we’d anticipated, perhaps. Is the ship slowly turning away from the iceberg? Was the iceberg ever there? Is Sony still going to die a terrible death at sea? Where is that old lady and her big honkin’ jewelry?

Who knows. I just want more stuff.

Wow, I really hope that Sony’s poor PR department doesn’t have trouble sleeping at night… cause damn, they can spin a tale :D
Wasn’t it just two weeks ago that the November numbers came in and PS2 was at the bottom of console sales?

I can believe they’ve solved the problems, but there is no way in hell they’re getting a million in the US by the end of December.

Actually, Mythology, the PS2 was the biggest-selling console in November, just not as big as the two Nintendo portables. The numbers in the article are the November numbers.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
