Saturday Morning Cartoons: Sonic the Hedgehog
You have to admit, the premise for Sonic the Hedgehog is kinda weird. An egg-shaped mad scientist turns fuzzy animals into robots, creating armies to fulfill his megalomaniacal schemes, and you—a ring-addicted, super-fast blue erinaceinae—try to stop him. Weird.
Turns out, though, that the Saturday morning cartoon that tried to weave a cohesive story out of that strangeness was probably one of the best video game-based shows ever made. A surprisingly dark plot, cool animation, an awesome intro, Cylon-looking robots—they even managed to make Dr. Robotnik seem pretty scary!
This week, we’ve got the first episode of 1993’s Sonic the Hedgehog (Not to be confused with the crappier The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog). Get ready to hear the song that’s going to be stuck in your head for the rest of the weekend. Just make the jump.

thanks for the ”(Not to be confused with the crappier The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog)” bit – turned out that i have seen bits of the adventures of sonic lately on tv, this one is definitely a lot better.
Holy Crap, I thought I was the only one that actually watched this cartoon when I was a kid (I was such a Sonic fan, had all the genesis titles, suck it SNES). But it got canceled before they could tie up the story (ended with a big cliff hanger). They did the same thing with Reboot, but luckily they continued airing up in canada so they eventually finished the story (for the most part anyway). ABC never could seem to keep there saturday morning cartoon schedule the same from week to week.
ah man, back when saturday morning cartoons were worth watching. this, Pirates of Dark Water, those were the days!
This is being released on DVD sometime in the next year according to tvshowsondvd.com. I used to watch this every saturday morning and remember it got very good after the first season when they didn’t feel the need to add in power rings.I also agree it was much better than the adventures of sonic the hedgehog.
This is kinda scary, but I was talking with my boyfriend about old video game based Saturday morning cartoons and told him I’d love to get my hands on the old Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon :D
OMG… I totally remember Pirates of Dark Water. Reboot was great too… Enzo grows up to be such a stud.
