Wii vs. PS3 vs. Xbox 360

The folks over at Compete.com have put together some pretty interesting figures concerning the demand for the three next-gen consoles. Now I have no idea how or where they came up with these numbers, I tried reading how they do it on their site and came away confused. But, they are an independent site that deals in this sort of thing so I don’t see where they would be biased against one system or the other.

Regardless, it’s interesting to see the sharp drop in demand for PS3s right after the launch, while the demand for the Wii and the 360 continues to climb. For a system that’s over a year old, it’s nice to see that people still want the 360 despite the lack of a strong line-up of killer games. The Amazon.com $100 Xbox promotion certainly helped put the system back on people’s must have lists.

On a pure traffic volume basis, the 360 generated more online interest on the 23rd, than either the Playstation 3 or Wii commanded on their respective launch days, making one thing clear — the Amazon promotion was the Xbox 360’s Launch 2.0.

I’d like to see what this chart will look like after the holidays. My guess is that the demand for PS3s will shoot back up again and run about even with the other two systems. But will it show a sharp decline again after the holidays are over, or pull ahead to become the front runner?

One important thing to remember is that this is for online consumers. This may be drastically different than demand at brick-and-mortar stores.

In Sony’s defense, I think the perception is just that there aren’t any PS3’s available, so I don’t even know if people are bothering to look at the moment (I found I haven’t been).

I’m unsurprised in the rise of interest in 360 and Wii, however. Everyone I’ve shown my Wii to has been impressed (no pun intended) and wanted one for themselves, and I think the “high end” crowd might just be going with the 360 for their xmas needs since there are essentially no PS3’s available.

Next year will be interesting.
