Apple iPhone Unveiled!

Are you seeing what I’m seeing? Clearly, finally, it has been unveiled at MacWorld here in San Francisco’s Moscone Center. Yes, I know it’s mind blowingly beautiful but let’s look at some of the specs:

  • 11.6 millimeter thin (tiny!)

  • 3.5-inch 480×320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor (for when you’re actually talking on the thing)

  • 2 megapixel cam (for all those half naked bathroom pics)

  • 4GB or 8 GB of storage (not bad!)

  • Bluetooth with EDR and A2DP (of course)

  • WiFi that automatically engages (very handy)

  • Quadband GSM radio with EDGE (why not!?)

  • OS X (!!!!!!) with support for Widgets, Google Maps, Safari, and iTunes with CoverFlow

  • 5 hours battery life and 16 hours in music mode (wa wa wee wa!)

So what’s the damage? It’s going to be a Cingular exclusive in the US in June—$499 for a two year contract, with the 8GB for a hundred extra. So it’s like buying a PS2… but more worth it. And with an accelerometer, gaming opportunities abound. Any ideas, boys and girls?

Hotness.

The Zune just died.

DON’T BE HATING ON THE PS3. WE JUST GOT OURS YESTERDAY AND RESISTANCE LOOKS AND PLAYS RED HOT. THE MAIN GUY IS SMOKING, TOO.

I worry about what will happen when you put it in your pocket. You know, the one with sharp keys.

Mikey said:

If there is a terminal widget of some kind, I’m so there. As for keys, it’s like a Treo….screen protector time. Zune? What’s that?

MauiPotiki said:

Uh huh. Is it’s screen as resistant as the iPods?

Super Timsy said:

Five hour battery life and Cingular…I don’t like the sound of that.

Zodiac said:

I want that! But I’m confused about the battery life thing. If I’m using it as a phone…shouldn’t it last for like…2 days?

John said:

5 Hour battery life??? Good Grief! I have to see how that thing will feel holding it to my face. I’m not interested in Cingular and the price…though probably justified….is too high for me…and sadly…we all know Apple…there will not be a price reduction! NEXT!

Five..Hundred…Dollars

Apple rips off its customers again with ludicrous markups. If they’re charging $500, that means apple is getting paid $700. I can buy the Sandisk 8GB video player with a bigger and better screen, 8 hour playback battery life that supports SD cards, and a great phone, and still walk home with over $100 still in my pocket

But the followers of the CHurch of Jobs love to throw their wallets at him, so who is he to complain?

zytroop said:

Holy shit I’d fuck a girl for that.

Remember it’s five hours of battery life IF YOU USE IT ALL THE TIME. That’s NORMAL for phones and well enough.

Resurgam said:

DO NOT WANT

“So it’s like buying a PS2…”

Really? I thought those were cheaper, though they do come in silver and black like this… ;)

tiny dancer said:

“Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode—no word on standby time yet.”

Ok, that had me worried too. 5 hours of talk time is decent, right? It’s been seventy years since I had a good battery, so my frame of reference is all off.

And what kind of standby times do we find acceptable these days?

MuddBstrd said:

That’s a very sexy looking device, but there’s no way in hell I’m paying $500 for it plus a two year contract. Maybe if that puppy comes down in price by about $200, but until then, I’m sticking with my crappy 4+ year old phone.

DO NOT WANT

raindog said:

My 2-year-old Sanyo camera phone has maybe 3 hours of talk time and 3-4 days of standby, so I would hope for 5 days of standbytime on a phone with 5 hours of talk time. But my numbers are based on actual use and theirs are glossy marketing talk, so I’ll be interested in hearing the reality.

It is sexy and probably market-changing, but I don’t know if it’ll be a winner if it’s chained to the Cingular boat anchor.

Tufas said:

You mean, same price as a PS3 as in THREE, right?

Better story would be: What would YOU rather buy, reader?

An Apple iPhone 8GB – $599
A PS3 60GB – $599

I love Apple. I have a 24” iMac. I love it. But my answer would most defintely be a PS3.

I mean, who doesn’t already have great phones and better mp3 players?

And whats a Zune?

Cheers
T.

I probably won’t get the first gen, but I was thinking about some things.

1. Yes, I DO WANT. It looks sleek and sexy, I love that it’s full OS X, which should mean that I can put whatever apps I want on there and they’ll run. Nice.

2. The scratching is a good point. One of the live bloggers at the show I was reading made a note that as Mr. Jobs touched the screen, he never saw a finger print – so probably it’s coated like my Treo is.

3. Speaking of the Treo: $349 with plan. That has CDMA and Bluetooth. The iPhone has GSM, Bluetooth, WiFi, EDGE, 4 GB storage space, and the iTunes playing (so it will play my movies/music) – so $499 price doesn’t hurt my feelings too much.

4. This is still first gen, so odds are like the RAZR which was crazy price insane when it first came out, within 12-18 months, it will be down to around $200 with plan – and that I could live with. Heck, I’d almost get one without a plan since the WiFi/Bluetooth alone would be enough to make my day.

Perfect? We’ll see – but it’s a very good first step, and I’m curious to see how the other phone makers respond.

MuddBstrd said:

Getting it first gen is a bad idea anyway. Isn’t there some rule about never buying an Apple product in its first generation? The sweet spot is the subsequent second and third gens.

Noun said:

Remember kids, the RAZR launched for $500 with a 2 year contract ($800 for just the phone).

My thoughts?
That thing is 100% pure sex.

Oh my sweet god, this is the first time I’ve ever, EVER drooled over a cell phone.
I want one. Bad.

IntrepidHomoludens said:

Hmm, it’s not like I want to have sex with that thing exactly.

I would like to have sex with a hot man while holding it, though. Yes, that’s it.

I got one year and 2-3 more months before my plan with Verizon expires and then I’ll consider it, yes.

Fuzzypaws said:

Too bad about the Cingular exclusivity, they almost had me. But Cingular is the sphincter of the big four US cell providers – it’s almost as expensive as Verizon AND has the worst customer service around. I’ll wait for the phone to come to Sprint, thanks – by which time it should have dropped in price.

Wolfi said:

Love it, want it- even though it already has some very serious downsides:
Like all iPods, there’ll be no removable / replaceable battery, which will certainly become a problem on a device you most likely use more than your iPod.
It has OS X, but it won’t feature ANY POSSIBILITY to install additional software other than what’s already on there and what Apple dictates through iTunes.
And I guess we’ll simply have to wait and see if tapping on the screen with our fingers will be just as precise as using the keyboard on a Treo is after a while…
As for Cingular, of course they’ll go with a GSM provider to make it a global device and not one you can use in the US, Canada and some random Asian countries…

i love any phone that will slide[[i.e.: chocolate] or that flips to reveal a keyboard [[i.e.: enV]. but this… ugh. i dont even want any of those anymore! A TOUCH SCREEN! i love this phone soo much. but i hope that the price will drop just a little, then i’ll seriously think about saving up!

IntrepidHomoludens said:

It’s an Apple, though. Thus the chances of any kind of price drop are next to nil.

Lyvianus said:

I, for one, am tired of shot after shot at the ps3. We get it, it’s expensive and you don’t like that, move on to something else. I’d just like to see a week devoted to not mentioning the ps3 then slamming it. I’m not wild about the price either. And besides, 500 dollars for a phone? That thing better cure cancer or at least have more than 4 gigs of memory.

pirateprince said:

come on, it’s all in fun! despite everything i know i’ll get one, as soon as a game comes out for it that i just have to have. :)

d-k-x said:

Everyone may make fun of the PS3, but you know they’re all going to end up having one eventually :P

However, I don’t care much for this phone. It’s hot, but I’m not really a phone person. I actually had mine taken away because I didn’t use it enough (didn’t ask for it in the first place though).

tiny dancer said:

So, we know Apple doesn’t like to play the price-drop game, but the deal-breaker for me here is Cingular exclusivity.

I wonder: will Apple’s price/design totalitarianism extend to the iPhone’s service provider as well, or will they follow the usual route of keeping a phone exclusive with one provider or another for a certain amount of time before making it more widely available?

Toonhead! said:

When I hear people complaining about anything that’s obviously years ahead of everything else, I can’t help but think back to what CmdrTaco said on Slashdot the day the iPod was first announced:

“No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame.”

There just ain’t pleasing some people!

As far as prices go, they’ll come down in time with new models, but your average cell phone user is obviously NOT the market they want to be in. That MobilePC / Palm / Crackberry crowd is where the money is, and compared to those devices this is a great value.

On paper, anyway: I’ll wait to see what field reports come up with once it’s released. And I sure hope that bigass screen doesn’t crack when dropped as easily as RAZRs do.

Look, Its just plain and simple. This phone is the best thing that has ever been invented. I advise everyone to watch the keynote and get the full low down on the phone.

As for the people that complain about the price. Well i personaly own a treo 700w and a 30gb ipod. i spent 350 w/ a 2yr srvs plane for the treo and 250 for the ipod. So the five hundred dollar price is not a rip off or overpriced at all. And i really doubt the fact that the price will come down. I havent ever seen ipod price come down expet when the newest ipod came out instead of 299.99 it was 249.99.

As for what would happen in your pocket. The phone is enabled with a proximity sensor, so that when a big object is a certain distance away from the screen the screen shuts off and the touch screen is auto disabled.

This phone has so much technology in it its crazy. I instantly switched back to cingular plan on selling my treo and buying one. I cant wait.

again do your self a favor go to www.apple.come and watch the intro to iphone presentation. You will be blown away

oh yes said:

all of you make me laugh with ur assumptions that the price will drop. Remember everyone this is not a regular phone, its made by Apple. The price will most likely not drop very much or at all for that matter.

Also for all of you that want to wait for it to go to another carrier. Have fun waiting atleast 2 years!

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
