Azeroth's Actual Miles

Because games don’t take enough time out of MMORPG blogger Tobold’s life, the dude’s calculated the actual landmass of the virtual realm Azeroth in World of WarCraft, pre-Burning Crusade. To measure a square mile, he reasons that you can count the running steps of any character (while the races all have different walking speeds, they do have the same running speed) and assume that they run like a human marathoner at a steady 12 m.p.h. Without using any of the game’s speed-boosting items, he set off on this epic quest. The result?
Tobold discovered that Azeroth is 80 square miles! Think that’s big? Well, to draw a pointless comparison, the real-life city of New York is 301 square miles (but Manhattan is only about 23.7 square miles). And to add another ridiculous point, both Azeroth and New York City have populations of about 8 million. Although it may suck to be waiting in the queue, it can’t be nearly as bad as the line this panda has to wait in at the local post office.
