Blizzard Teases Us With More Starcraft, Diablo

Ha. Maybe it was the launch day high, plain old indiscretion, or an utterly brilliant press strategy, but Blizzard exec Itzik Ben Bassat let a few tantalizing tidbits drop from his lips at a Burning Crusade launch event in foggy London town last night.
On the eve of the release of what is arguably the most-anticipated PC title, game, or thing-in-a-box within a six-month blast radius, Blizzard had the big brass balls to remind us of their other industry-shattering intellectual properties. Said Bassat to the assembled crowd:
“As a Starcraft player I can tell you that I hope it wouldn’t go a decade – we launched Starcraft in ‘98 – I hope it wouldn’t go a decade before we stand here and celebrate the next Starcraft together.”
(Yeah.)
“Don’t forget that we have two more franchises that we love – Diablo and Starcraft.”(I know!)
“We haven’t forgotten that we have these two franchises, and what I can tell you is that I look forward to stand here in a few years, or whenever it’s going to be, and celebrate with you the launch of the next Starcraft or the next Diablo.”Pour me in a bucket already. According to Eurogamer, this was about the time the Blizzard PR folks began to “look a bit uncomfortable,” which could mean absolutely anything. Since PR folks have deathly allergies to both the unfiltered truth and unsubstantiated claims about unannounced future products, this could go either way.
Am I drafting character ideas for World of Starcraft or Diablo 3? No. But there’s a good chance, even if it’s just a result of Bassat’s outburst, there’s at least some discussion over at Blizzard of what to do with those two valuable franchises.
