Disgaea Anime Released January 9th
To anyone who has played the sleeper PS2 strategy hit Disgaea, it is no surprise that an anime adaptation was on it’s way. As of yesterday, the first volume of the Disgaea anime, The Netherworld Prince has been released by Geneon Animation.
The DVD will be featuring 16:9 Anamorphic Video Format, English and Japanese Audio, subtitles (i should hope so), a textless opening animation, and a trailer for the Disgaea2 game.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Disgaea (and you call yourself a gamer!) the story takes place in the Underworld during a sort of civil war, as Laharl, the rightful heir to the throne of the Underworld, must reassert his authority after every demon worth their salt tries to take the throne. It’s the sort of thing that is immediately endearing to people who like their cute things kind of twisted, people like myself.
Other familiar characters are Laharl’s cute demon girl vassal, Etna (my personal favorite, there’s nothing like a skimpy leather outfit with metal rings to awaken my pathos) and the slightly annoying do-gooder blonde bimbo angel, Flonne.
And of course, lots and lots of exploding prinnies.

If it’s anywhere near as bad as the manga was, stay far, far away from this.
I’ve seen the subtitled Japanese anime and I agree with Magic Pink.
The Disgaea anime is pretty terrible. I’d suggest just torrenting it and not spending a cent to see how “expanded universe” is not necessarily a good thing.
I’m playing Disgaea 2 at the moment and have never had so many hours of my life sucked up before by a game!
But if this is anything like as crummy as the cutscene cartoons in the game I think I’ll give it a miss thanks.
We tried to watch it today and stopped it after about 15 min. The voice acting is insufferable. The games are amazing though.
