Dreamcast Death Imminent, Again...Seriously

sega-gd-rom.jpg

The system that has died more times than anyone can count might, finally, be meeting its maker. Rumors abound of the demise of SEGA's proprietary GD-ROM format that is used for both its NAOMI arcade machines and the legendary, as well as underappreciated, Dreamcast. Dreamcast Scene theorizes that SEGA could discontinue the format as soon as February and that it could mean the following:

  • No more NAOMI arcade games.
  • No more NAOMI ports to Dreamcast (Recent NAOMI ports include Under Defeat and Radirgy).
  • Trigger Heart Exelica (February 2007) and Karous (March 2007) will unexpectedly be the final official Dreamcast games.
  • The NAOMI 2 will no longer be supported.
  • The Chihiro arcade board will no longer be supported.
  • GD-ROM capabilities of the Triforce arcade board will no longer be supported.

Dreamcast Scene is urging its readers to write to SEGA and ask them to halt these plans, if they do exist. If you care at all for future of this finely aged machine, follow the link and voice your opposition. Personally, it would be sad to see this system finally put out to pasture, but you have to admit, it's had a good life...perhaps it is time to let go. /cry

URGENT!
Sega may stop GD-ROM production as early as February!

I still think, in our age of Wii, Dreamcast is the best name for a console ever.

This story kind of makes me want to pick one up (again).

Um, I loved my Dreamcast (and still own it) but... they were actually still making games for it? Where have I been?

I bought a brand new Dreamcast just last month... went to eBay and for under 80 euros got 10 games that I once had / always wanted (except Samba de Amigo with Maracas, those are bloody expensive)... and I love it!

Cheers,
T.

I'll always have a special spot in my heart for my Dreamcast for being the only one of my consoles I got for free. :)
