Fallout 3 Still Exists, Prepping For Publicity

F3.jpg

Few games have seen such a rocky ride as Fallout 3. Fallout and Fallout 2 are widely recognized as two of the best examples of non-traditional RPGs ever made - and, frankly, two of the best games of any genre ever made. The post-apocalyptic setting, combination of gritty toughness and tongue-in-cheek surreal silliness, combined with great gameplay, combat, and character interaction made exploring the world of Fallout a truly classic experience.

So when Interplay canceled Black Isle Studios' development of Fallout 3 (code-named "Van Buren") it was a colossal letdown for Fallout fans everywhere and a singularly sad moment for those of us who love nothing better than skipping about nuclear wastelands in search of lost technology, anti-radiation meds, and mutant bastards to decapitate.

And when Morrowind and Oblivion developer Bethesda Softworks bought what remained of the franchise and began developing a new, different Fallout 3, there was a strong feeling of hope pinioned by the doubt that anybody but our men and women at Black Isle Studios, which had given us so many great RPGs, could do the job.

Three years later and the game is finally starting to see some press, which means it's at least somewhat farther along in development - and maybe one day we'll be able to play the little fucker. In an exclusive interview with the UK Official Xbox Magazine, Bethesda's Todd Howard, executive producer of Oblivion, Morrowind and Fallout 3, had this to say:

"We started work (on Fallout 3) in late 2004 with a few people. We only had about 10 people on it until Oblivion wrapped, but most of our staff is on it now."
"We have pretty long preproduction phases on our stuff," continues Howard "doing concepts, design, building prototypes, and such. We should be ready soon to show it off, but we'll see."

Well, that confirms a 360 launch for the game, coming as it does from an Official Xbox source - I think that's fair to say. But I'll be playing mine on the PC, if possible, just for old time's sake.

Damn, so they got rid of the point and click formula? Fallout is my favorite game of all time, and I've been dreading Fallout 3. I hope it doesn't ruin the series.

The great thing about Fallout is that I never felt like I had to grind in it. Everything else Bethesda has made has had a strong grind feel to it (not to mention looks like shit too).

I seriously doubt their ability to make a Fallout 3 that captures the essence of what Fallout is/was.

I'm all for trying different things, having different takes and variations of something, but there are somethings that shouldn't be changed for the sake of change. Please keep the single player non-internet aspect, the isometric view, simplified RPG gaming and the point and click interface! And get rid of that freakin' ugly menu screen, geez. Every screen doesn't have to show off 3D graphics no matter how good or shit they are.

one of my concerns is the fact one of the things that made fallout work so well in its 2d fashion was the amazing death scenes. The minigun actually tore body parts off and bodies exploded. I cannot see this sort of animatino being pulled of effectively in a 3d engine.

This game will suck. Bethesda has already begun to ruin the Elderscrolls series, this was very aparent with the release of Oblivion. I really don't see much hope for this game, unless Bethesda scraps the multiplatform idea and makes this game exclusively for the PC. I thought microsoft was the best thing to happen to the console, boy was I wrong.
