I Bought A PS3: Tiny's Story Of Glory And Shame

Tiny & Shame

So, I did it. I don’t know why I did it, all I know is that I went to the store to buy the VGA cable for my Xbox 360 and six hours later my eyes were bleeding and a big, beautiful, largely useless black spaceship was parked in my living room.

Fruit Brute’s immediate reaction was, and I quote: “You actually bought one of those doorstops?” Followed quickly by: “I wish you could see that my eyes just rolled back completely in my head and then back around again.” Followed by: “Be sure to write about the PS3.”

That was pretty much the general reaction.

I’ve seen on the forums that some of you have also taken the leap and bought a PS3…but not many. So I’ll do my best to share some details of my response to this very, very mixed experience. Also it should distract me from the fact that I will now be sharing my dog’s kibble for the foreseeable future, at least until the food stamps arrive.

So she’s big, the PS3. She’s gorgeous. She’s problematic and largely unfinished, as well. And just about every problem she’s got has “Hopefully To Be Addressed In A Firmware Update” written all over it. That refrain gets old quick, but such is the fate of an impulse buyer.

Make the jump to see my breakdown. I mean, my breakdown of the PS3, or at least my first few days with it.

Where to start? Let’s do this sanely:

System & Interface:

The console itself is shiny and gorgeous, with touch-sensitive eject and power buttons, and despite its unfriendly shape I managed to stand it in an open-frame black bookcase beneath my TV where it’s hardly visible at all.

Connecting to a 1080p TV with HDMI is a mixed blessing. The picture, when it works, is unbelievably crisp and a definite improvement over the 360’s VGA output at the same resolution. The drawback, of course, is that HDMI is extremely picky about what TVs and devices it works with (which I suppose is why MS went with the less stellar but more reliable VGA at first). My Time Warner DVR had similar issues, but when I turn on the PS3, all I get are diagonal lines a-la scrambled cable porn channels (without those precious two seconds of viewable porn!); all I have to do to fix it is unplug and immediately replug the HDMI cable from either end, but that’s annoying as hell, so I’m using an HDMI switcher, which does the same thing but uses a button instead. Hopefully, this can be fixed (update prayer #1).

NB: That’s an HDMI-exclusive problem. Other connections work fine but look worse.

The XMB interface is familiar to anyone with a PSP, and has very similar settings such as Photos, Video, Game, Internet, Settings, each with pretty standard options. It looks amazing, graphically, but there are a dearth of settings – the startup and interface customizations that were missing from the 360 at launch are also missing from the PS3. (Update prayer #2.)

The SIXAXIS controllers are mostly fine. They’re comfortable and familiar, if a bit light, although I’ve yet to see much motion-sensing action in games and when I have, it’s been poorly executed, tacked-on, or hard to understand. Definitely not worth the absence of rumble feedback, a feature we’ve all gotten used to and which really does improve immersion and game experience. It’s sad and stupid: you can tell that Sony got scared by the Wii and ended up making things worse for themselves.

Internet & Store:

Connecting the PS3 to wireless internet was no more difficult than doing so with the Wii, the 360, the DS or the PSP. Registering a PlayStation account and signing up with the PlayStation Network (which is free, that’s a plus) was surprisingly simple from a company that usually makes you jump through stoopid hoops (installed FFXI recently?).

Buying credit to spend at the store was simple (they wouldn’t mess that up) and using the store was a lot like using the PSP browser. That is to say, it’s simple but using a mouse-like cursor is a silly idea from a practical standpoint. The store functions wonderfully, however, and buying and downloading games for both the PS3 and PSP was easy, although the choices remain anemic at best. It does show real promise, provided Sony follows through – which is, of course, the big question (#3).

Blast Factor is an excellent example of great graphics and great gameplay…that you’ve seen before on the 360, where it’s called Geometry Wars. Yeah. Hopefully we’ll see more, better, soon. (Update prayer #4.)

Meanwhile, on the PSP, playing Syphon Filter has been entertaining, but I draw the line at Crash Bandicoot. The dream of a library of PSOne games available for PSP is still a dream (Update prayer #5).

Remote Play, which for some unknown reason lets you see and control your PS3 through your PSP, did nothing to me but blank out my TV and force me to reset my PS3. So that was fun. (#6 much?)

PS3 Games:

Short section. I’ve tried Resistance: Fall of Man which looked great but isn’t really my speed, so I can’t be too objective. Untold Legends is very pretty and quickly becomes very boring as well. Poor Genji looks great (sensing a theme?) but again, feels like a launch title. The one game I am enjoying greatly, which is good because it looks like it’ll have to last me a while, is Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

Of course, you could be playing that on a 360.

But for what it’s worth, the game looks and runs absolutely flawlessly on the PS3; I’ve yet to compare it to the 360 version, but it’s hard to imagine the 360 getting things quite as crisp as the PS3 does when it’s working right.

As with my 360 experience, I don’t expect to see many games I really want to play for months, if not seasons. I knew that going in, though, so I can’t complain. (But it still counts as Update prayer #7.)

Blu-ray Movies:

Another short section. I tried out Aeon Flux and The Devil Wears Prada and Xmen 3 on Blu-ray and, for what it’s worth, was utterly entranced. The new smart menu popup bar that’s customized for each movie is pretty nifty, letting you change audio tracks and various other options on the fly. The video is, naturally, even better than cable or satellite 1080i HD. Of course, with the format war as yet unfinished, this is all still a gamble, and I’m not rushing to replace my DVD collection.

There could be more Blu-ray options in the settings menu (#8).

PS2 Games:

Enter the shitstorm.

PS2 emulation totally blows monkey nuts. Some games are worse than others, but they almost all look “emulated.” Outside the “emulation square” the PS2 games are clearly contained within a visible black shell of, like, “actual PS3 screen-space” – and the border between the two can be flickery and weird and, frankly, cheap looking.

What sucks the most, however, is the very obvious graphical problem with jaggies and text and pretty much the edges of everything. Most have speculated this is due to a pixel flipping issue,

which any of you who’ve toyed with console emulation on the PC will immediately recognize. Check out some pictures of the effect for a better idea of what I refer to as Update prayers #9, #10 and #11, because this is a deal-breaker.

Games that feature an in-game option to turn on progressive scan (such as God of War, which I can’t confirm because someone “borrowed” my copy) will rectify this mess when you activate that feature, and some games look decent – Disgaea 2 actually looked better on the PS3, and Okami had the deal-breaker jaggy problem, but not to the worst possible extent.

The game that’s getting the most guff for looking the worst? Guess. Go on, guess. Final Fucking Fantasy XII, one of the games nearly everyone was hoping to play on the PS3. It looks abysmal. (Update prayer #12, just for making me extra cranky.)

Also, expect to buy a USB memory card reader if you want to import your game saves from the PS2, as the PS3 doesn’t have that bit. No way to update that, methinks.

Oh, and the SIXAXIS controller disconnects whenever you start a PS2 game. Awesome. (Update prayer #13, we made a baker’s dozen!)

Finally, the Conclusion:

I’m glad I did it. It was foolhardy and bankrupting and I am now the laughingstock of all of my friends who know better (and a few who don’t), but a shiny new toy is a shiny new toy, and I’m academically interested in observing how/if the system improves over time. (Big ole ‘Huzzah!’ for Update prayer #14, which is admittedly kind of a catch-all, but I’m on a roll.)

For my $0.02, the PS3 over HDMI at 1080p looks crisper and more promising than the 360’s VGA business, but HDMI’s many-headed hydra of HDCP compliance and compatibility issues make me think Microsoft may have done the right thing in taking the safer, marginally less spectacular route. Of course, they seem to be catching up on that count, so the point may become moot one day.

Mostly the system feels unfinished. You can feel where future updates will/could flesh-out the features and iron out some of the quirks, a lot like the 360 at launch. Background downloading, startup and appearance settings, etc. were all introduced or improved three, six, nine months down the line. Aside from keeping up the content flow, there are a few major, major flaws that Sony must address soon, and many more little touches that would improve the system, but I do have hope, and I’m tentatively pleased, considering my limited expectations and how dire it could have been, but I’m not exactly slapping myself on the back as the Smartest Consumer On The Block.

I’m sure I missed a lot, and if any of you have questions, please ask and I’ll do my best to be PS3 Test Monkey for the site, since none of my colleagues seem quite so eager to be an idiot in debt.

Luckily, that’s my specialty.

Tiny I don’t know if you like fighters or not but I too felt like there was a very crappy selection of titles out there and have been longing for a wii since buying the system back in november. However if you do like fighters try and find a way to download the tekken 5 DR from the onine store it’s only 17 dollars and looks great.

Plus look down the line at feburary and March, better titles are on the way :D

I feel your pain brother. The weird thing about the PS2 emulation is that they’re not using software. The built the PS2 hardware into the system to avoid it looking “emulated”. I haven’t played my PS3 on high-def yet, so I haven’t had any problems with the PS2 games, but it’s good to know that my decision not to buy a high-def TV with only two PS3 games I like was the right one.

I am generally a Wii-fanatic, gaming wise, but when I went into a Gamestop to try (fruitlessly) to find a Wii for a friend, I ended up walking out with a high-end PS3 for myself.

Granted, the game selection is pretty sparse right now (unless you like Sports and Guns) but I am actually pretty darn pleased with my purchase.

Ridge Racer 7 looks amazing on our 50” Panasonic plasma (as do Blu-Ray discs and DVDs), and although Resistance wasn’t my cup of tea, my boyfriend devoured it (and completed it) in about 3 days.

Remember that very console starts out slow, and with some “issues”. The 360 wasn’t a mind-blowing machine in its first 2 months on the market, so I think it’s only fair to give Sony some time to work out the kinks.

I’m glad to finally see someone buy a PS3 and not completely orgasm over their review of it. You told the truth, and I respect you alot for that. You didnt try to use half truths and blatant hope to make the system seem more worthy then it is. Honestly, if more people reviewed like that, well, there’d be less flamewars.

in a gay site where everyone is in love with games … i find incredibly unsurprised that you called your ps3 a “she” xD

Erm, how much did all this cost and just how are you going to afford it?!

I just got a 32” Sony Bravia LCD HDTV for Christmas, and am loving it, and oddly enough, the thing that looks the best on it is my Dreamcast through VGA. If I get a 360 (still doubtful, but looking more likely all the time) I’m glad it supports VGA, so I can use that for the DC/360 and use HDMI for the PS3 I know I’ll eventually own.
As for the PS3, it seems buggy right now, hopefully by the time I get one (probably this time next year), they’ll have more kinks worked out. And almost every console launches without any really stellar games (Dreamcast and Wii being the only two exceptions I can think of), so I wouldn’t worry about the games: Give them time, they’ll come.

Essex: I do hope March brings me PS3 love, but I’ll try not to get too excited until I have proof in my tiny hot hands.

All-American Gamer: I did learn from the Sony forums that the PS2 hardware is being included, at least at first – which only makes these issues weirder, IMO. The take-away message for this aspect of the PS3 is, if you were hoping for an Xbox 360-style redux/improvement on your PS2 games, hold off for a while. At the moment you’ll very likely be disappointed. And angry.

Spaz: I’m glad someone else has my respect for the religion of impulse-shopping! And you’re 100% right about new consoles and working out kinks. At the moment, the kinks seem to be rather large and many, but you’re apt in pointing to the 360 launch as an example. Even the Wii, whose technical ambitions are modest at best in most ways, has yet to roll out all of its features.

CerberusTheHitman: Thank you very much! That’s precisely what I was going for, I’m really glad it came across. It’s a game system, not a war for foreign oil: we certainly ought to be able to talk about it maturely and without deciding beforehand what our opinions will be.

Shin: That's an excellent philosophy/strategy. If I hadn't "taken one for the team," I hope I'd be using it myself! And your TV sounds sweet...enjoy that VGA input!

I similarly impulsed one myself just this morning! My wife is ready to kill me. I’ve done nothing but talk about all the various mistakes that Sony has made this time around and how much I love my 360 and Wii, but when confronted with a stack of systems taller than me at the local Best Buy, I somehow couldn’t resist…

Thankfully I really do enjoy Resitance and I think of the purchase as a down-payment on future good times (MGS4 and FFXIII, primarily).

My biggest gripe is actually that I have an early-generation HDTV that can do 1080i but not 720p – with the 360, it simply upscans to 1080i on 720p games. Not so with the PS3 – instead it defaults DOWN to 480p :( The game still looks very nice, of course, but this (much like the horrible PS2 emulation issue) seems like a quick firmware fix.

I’ll probably be back to my games of Zelda and Viva Pinata by tomorrow night, but a new toy is hard to resist. Enjoy, Tiny!

Great story. Loved the picture. I’m sure all things PS3 will improve in about a year or so. It’s neat to see how things change for a console (e.g. who would have thunk that the PS2 could push out something like God of War? and that the DS would bring about all this great gaming back when they were first released). Now that MS has had a year to improve on the 360, I think I’m finally starting to get on board with the idea of buying one.

I hear games that are in 480i for PS2 will look pretty nasty on the PS3. I know FFXII, while it does have widescreen, lacks a progessive scan mode, which makes it look beyond fugly.

I remember PS3fanboy posting some semi-remedies to the problem (mainly changing your cables), but all in all, if you have a PS3, you probably have a PS2, heh.

Have you tried Motorstorm and the SIXAXIS controls? Feels just like Excite Truck, but actually better, and much much MUCH more beautiful.

Anyways, I’m glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for writing about it. It’s bound to get better.

I don’t own a PS3, but I work at a Target, and I know even our display model has tons of issues. It freezes up about every 5-10 minutes on most games, and gets stuck in a loop about half-way through its informative video.

Most days I don’t even bother turning it on.

raindog said:

Shikar, I can’t believe how every time I walk into a Target to search fruitlessly for a Wiimote, there are 2 or 3 people watching the Wii demo loop video. It’s like they’re pod people or something. Haven’t verified that it’s the same people all the time or anything though….

And speaking of console disappointments, while I don’t envy PS3 early adopters, I am pretty let down by the virtual console on the Wii. I’m not going to go out and buy a 360 out of spite or anything (I don’t even have the time to really get into Zelda yet) but it’s like they’re deliberately sandbagging it in the US or something.

I mean, clearly they could put out nothing but Bible Adventures and Revolution X on the VC and the Wii would still be sold out, so I guess it’s kinda minor compared to having the screen or controller cut out every time you play. But that just makes it the pimple on Nintendo’s otherwise perfectly scrubbed and beaming face.

Shikar said:

I have a Wii, and watch the patterns for when the controllers come in (its how I finally get a 2nd one last week) but they come in ,to my store at least, around the middle of the week and only get 1 box of 1 type of controllers (seems a little random which ones we get though).

As for the Wii demo loop video, I hate that thing with a passion. Its only like 5 minutes long and gets really redundant when the other 2 (360 and PS3) are being quiet.

Nintendo failed on the controller thing. They made the ultimate party system and failed to produce any where near enough controllers for the system.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
