Nester Is Back In "Comic of Ruin"
Back in the day, there was a comic in Nintendo Power called Howard and Nester. Nester was a hot shot gaming expert who gave some tips and tricks in various video games. In each episode, Nester would get in some situation that he couldn’t get out and Howard would save him. The comics were short, but a highlight of the publication in the beginning.
Now Nester is back with Charlotte from Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin in Charlotte & Nester in “Comic of Ruin.” The original artist Joe Haley (Mr. DNA) is back with a vengeance for a two page spread on Deviant Art.
Since I’ve been playing a whole lotta Portrait of Ruin, I thought it’s be a good idea to make a Nester comic since the game features a partner system. The sensible Charlotte made a good stand-in for Howard, which is nice since I didn’t feel like drawing him in a dress. Nester takes over for Johnathan, says some really awful one-liners, and I give you, the readers, an actual game tip!
This comic is a great throwback to the days of rabidly anticipating news from the latest gaming publication. I couldn’t wait to get my paws on the latest Nintendo Power or EGM back then. Haley brought back Nester with all of the tenderness a trip down 8-bit lane can afford. Come back for the conclusion of his trilogy of comic terror.

I was never a huge fan of the comics in Nintendo Power, and come to think about it, have never been a fan of comics in gaming magazines (aside from the random Penny Arcade inclusion in EGM).
However, I did like how the Howard and Nester comics did in fact offer tips and hints for the games that were featured, such as walking around the outside of the castle to reach a hidden area in the original Dragon Warrior.
