Rumor: New PSP In Development

psp_cobalt%20copy.jpg

Pay attention, boys and girls, it seems that a rumor is wending its way through the internet about a new version of the PSP which looks like it's going to be pretty sweet... provided it's actually true. We don't have any confirmed reports about this, though, so bear in mind that it's still only an unsubstantiated rumor. However, if it's true, I'll be the first in line simply because it's got an extra thumbstick:

This brick-looking device is supposedly the PSP2. I honestly think it is just another mock-up produced by some bored graphic designer out there. This mock-up comes with some information: apparently the PSP2 is codenamed Cobalt (yes, like a less-than-stellar Chevy vehicle) and has a fairly decent spec list.

• All Metal & Ruggedized Rubber Build
• 200% Brighter Screen
• Dual Analog Controllers
• Visual Battery Display
• 8GB Flash Drive
• Wifi (a,b,g)
• Bluetooth V.2 (A2DP, AVRCP)
• Firmware 4.07

Let's keep our fingers (or thumbs, your choice) crossed and hope that something like this is actually on the horizon.

In order to work out why the popularity of the PSP is on the wane, you have to look at the PSP as it stands right now. The PSP is a very well made machine in almost every respect, the only place it really falls short is it's battery life.

The low battery life of the PSP can be attributed to a number of things - poor choice of battery cell configuration, optical disc drive, large bright monitor, fixed throughput processor etc. All of these things, in isolation, aren't a problem but taken together they severely hamper the longevity of the PSPs battery.

Enter the PSP2. You now have a supposed 200% brightness on the screen (something I question anyway considering the current brightness and clarity of the PSP screen).

I call shenanigans on the specs presented here for the simple reason that if Sony don't aim to fix the problems they currently have with the PSP - instead of just adding more to the mix - then the PSP2 will be a failure where the PSP was successful - successful in the sense that it stole enough of the market share from nintendo to hurt.

Wending? >_>

I disagree about the battery life being the PSP's biggest downfall. I've never had any battery issues and I'm not the most diligent of battery chargers...

If anything, the downside is still the entry price and the loading times. Both of which can be remedied. :D

If anything though, what keeps the PSP from being popular is the stigma it built up during its infancy when it lacked many good titles. Also, the anti-Sony vibe going around doesn't help to better its position.

Okay, but the point remains that if this PSP2 IS real, Sony aren't doing anything to fix the problems that exist for the PSP right now.

Remember the differences between the DS and DS lite? They were huge and Nintendo addressed everything that people saw was wrong with the system without having to release a new format. I just don't see that same "leap" with the specs listed above, not to mention that the mockup - real or not - us fugly in comparison to the PSP.

Incidentally, I get about 4 hours of solid gaming out of my PSP and roughly 10 out of my DS. 4 hours battery life in a handheld gaming device is a problem for me.

Hrm, I get around 8 hours out of my PSP and around 10 out of my DS(phat) too.

I dunno, personally I like this spec sheet. It addresses quite a few issues that people in the PSP community have complained about. The big one being the built-in memory and the improved wifi.

With the built-in memory, it would also appeal more to the people who would want to use it as a multimedia device, and the dual analogs would fix many people's control complaints.

Personally, I don't think this redesign is really; even if the specs are that render is just abysmal, a far cry from the sleek sexiness that is the PSP. :D

I hope it's a fake. It's pretty, but the layout of the buttons looks very uncomfortable (esp the shoulder buttons).

Analog sticks=wrong place. all the other buttons [excluding L and R] are gonna be in the way.
