Seven Great Franchises That Aren't.

franchise.jpg

What fills us with more gaming agitas than the launch of a titanic blockbuster franchise? Why, the demise of a titanic blockbuster franchise. Even the mighty can fall - and how. The departure of the creator or creative horsepower, a poorly executed platform crossover, laziness, lack of imagination, or the intervention of bumbling corporate nincompoops can all contribute to, well, I'll just point you somewhere in the direction of Dirge of Cerberus. Dirge indeed.

GamesRadar has put together a list of the seven biggest tanked franchises, which once were glory and now are merely gory. Bottoming out on the list is Tomb Raider, which escaped the top spot only by virtue of last year's Tomb Raider: Legend. Next up, Mega Man. 'Nuff said.

Viewtiful Joe came next, riding high until Red Hot Rumble made us all think of Mega Man. Yikes. I can't speak for number four, Dynasty Warriors, but Koei rubbed out eleven feudal Japanese slashy games in five years - either that's the tightest quality control ship on the gaming seas or somebody likes it fast and sloppy (somebody besides me).

Counting down the top three, we see Tenchu, which managed to ruin ninjas for everybody with Fatal Shadows. Score one more for pirates. Numero dos, Spy Hunter, has been around for centuries with gameplay that's too simple to screw up. Until Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run. Yawn.

Number one? Sonic. I buy that. No other side-scroller amped me half as much as the good old days of the little-blue-hedgehog-that-could, and no other 3D trainwreck has proved so disappointing as, hmm, let's see...last year's 360 stinker; a mess of a GBA port (2D but still bad); and Rivals and Riders.

True or Not True? Check out the GamesRadar feature for the full run-down on why these IPs can go suck an egg.

They had it. They lost it. Here they are

It got pretty corny near the end, but I can't say I ever hated it while playing it.
